Need some advice
Okay so I blew an engine and am in the market for another N54. I found a shop in Oklahoma that will ship me a rebuilt one with a 24k mile warranty and I also found a local, used one with 76k miles on it and a 6k mile warranty. The rebuilt one is 1600 dollars more than the used one and I would have to wait until after the first of the year. I plan on going FBO soon with either one but which engine should I buy? I need it to last already 4 or more years
Thanks |

What are the prices of each engine and what happened to your engine that blew and how many miles did you have on it?
Now would be a good time to slap on some upgraded turbos onto whichever engine you get....maybe get the cheaper engine and use the saved moneyt towards turbos if you can swing it |

The rebuilt one is $3595 +shipping and a core charge and shipping the core back so around $5200 and the used one is around $2800+ free shipping. Mine threw a rod bearing at 127k, ran fine until that. I'm just worried about how long each option will last me. I need it to last at least 4 more years. And I'm just worried about the used motor going out in the next 2 or s years

Basically what I'm asking is will the used motor last and if so when do these motors start failing and going out? The new option is obviously the best but would it be worth the extra money and is it worth waiting 2 MORE months without my car to have the new one

I would buy the used one. Like someone said slap some upgraded turbos on and inlets on it and have fun. These engine are pretty stout as far as the internals. These engines will last a very long time if you treat it right. It is things like turbos and water pumps that fail.while it is out change any gaskets that are leaking and do any mods you want. As long as they are giving you a 6k mile warranty. Any problems would be apparent in that 6k. You also get to keep your old engine for parts vs sending it back as a core. just my 2 cents. Good luck with whatever path you take

Since you lost a rod bearing, you should check out all of your injectors and consider upgrading them to index 12. I think the bearing issues may be related to fuel dilution.

Yeah I looked at injectors bc it was misfiring pretty bad and the 1st bank were all index 4 and the 2nd index were all index 11. So I'm probably gonna upgrade them as well as coil packs, plugs, all the gaskets, etc. But what could the fuel have diluted with?

Basically replace to index 12 or newer. If your only going to go FBO or stay below 500whp i would say just buy the used one. if your going to go single turbo or past 650whp, i say get it rebuilt by a real tuner like motiv or MMP. |

Okay so the used engine came with turbos, injectors and everything, if i put all of this in my car would the turbos and engine still be under warranty with BMW because it only has 76k miles.

FWIW, I think you made the right choice in getting the used motor. However if you are dead set that this thing needs to last 4 more years, why tempt fate by going FBO |

you should ask if the company your buying the used engine from offers any warranty... i would also redo all the major gaskets while the engine is out.. oil pan gasket, ofhg, valve cover gasket.. water pump and thermstat

Well the guy installing the motor is a family friend and is very trust worthy and we are gonna install all the gaskets and use the water pump off of my motor bc it's newer. I might abstain from FBO and just give it a little more pep in the step. Because like I said it's not an option whether or not it lasts 4 more years
