I also run BM3 tune on stage2 and drive hard all the time but I always take proper steps beforehand. For the record, I run the bmw brand pennzoil 0w30 and have never burned a single quart. I monitor all gauges to the T before I open it up.
aside from improper driving habits, are you saying if we were to go from 0w-40 to a 0w30, we can reduce the risk of oil starvation on these engines?

Essentially yes. Pressure will likely stay the same as that is determined by the oil pump but your flow will be greater with the 30. My shop recommended staying with the 30 with the tune for that exact reason. That said, it has to be super high quality oil.

Oil flow becomes even more critical with increased boost. I'm not high mileage but so far it has been flawless. My shop recommends I do an oil analysis this spring to see if I'm getting the appropriate level of protection.

I'm not saying going with a thicker running 40 like liqui moly is not good because their oil is top notch. All I'm saying, before you start ripping, make sure your gauges give you the green light first. If you don't then you can't really blame the car!

What 0w-30 oil do you recommend? Also, do you know if we should hold out on MHD or still too early to tell?

I bought my car with 35k and purchased an aftermarket warranty when I picked up the car. The car is currently at 45k and I filed the claim, now it’s a waiting game to see if it gets approved. I will let you guys know what happens..

I use the bmw 5w30 branded oil and it has been great. It is a rebranded pennzoil platinum oil.

Please do. I am tuned and also do my own oil changes so it would be hard to provide those key information if the insurance ever asks.

Get a used oil analysis done before you tune. If something is slightly wrong before you mod, then you will surely run into more problems when you add power.

Edit: just noticed you're already tuned. I would still recommend getting one done as soon as possible so you know the health of your motor.

Yea, wait until you are around 4-5k on that oil. I might have missed it but what oil are you running and are you monitoring your temps/pressure/etc?

I’m using Castrol Edge 0w-40 from Walmart. I look at my oil level about twice a week and that’s it. Oil temp has always been a notch below half way mark on the cluster.

You're probably fine. You sure that your castrol is LL01 approved? Your temps are fine as that is in the range of 240-250deg. Personally, since your tuned, I would get a obd scantool to monitor your vitals and then an oil analysis done at your next change. They give you a lot of info on what's going on inside and where it's headed.

How can you check oil pressure?

I think there's a hidden menu on the e90s but you likely need aftermarket gauges. I use an obd scantool that transmits to a tablet.

I also do my own oil changes, but I have a buddy with a shop who was able to give me some invoices for warranty company. However, warranty company did not ask me for invoice since I had put less than 10k miles on the car since I bought it. Also, I'm not sure how it works when you buy the warranty as a private owner, rather than a dealer selling you the warranty. The warranty did take a lot of pics when they went to check the car, but thankfully car looks stock..
