I tracked my 325i when I first got it using the stock RFT's.
Didn't have any issues really. The RFT's handled decently and the brakes didn't fade as I thought they might.
Speed on the straights were decent. Not 335 fast but decent before some late braking.
Body roll tended to be on the heavy side (for me) and the car wanted to oversteer quite a bit. Enough to where my instructor kept freaking out and grabbing the wheel to correct the line but I didn't feel it a whole lot.

Tracking is all about car control, adding more power is not always a good thing, it only covers up poor car control in newer drivers. Hit up your local auto X and do that a few times then hit the track once you have knowledge of your cars handling.

I recall reading a story once about an M3 driver on the track being shocked when an X5 passed him, the X5 driver was a local insturctor. In the end it shows a proper line and control of the car is more important than power.

Don't worry about mods or your car not being fast enough, for your first time at a autox or track even.

Just make sure your car's maintenance is good and up to date, and your tires are good.

If all of those checks out, just go out there and have fun.

Hey Vicky, go for it!!! You can show Law how an E9x should be driven hehe...

My E46 is track ready and a good driver using the E46 can take on a so-so track driver in a 335i...

Might be better as if you haven't tracked before, the 335i might be a little aggressive, though I loved every moment on the track with the 335i .

If anything depending on the Auto X set up your 328i will be faster, most take place in 1st and 2nd gear and the 328i will be less prone to losing traction from acceleration and you will be able to get on the power sooner.

Generally the tighter the track the car with less HP will be easier to drive since again your not dealing with loss of traction from power. But on a race track the 335i will beat the 328i out.

Well put. I think its best to learn on a less powerful car, as a strong engine will hide your flaws and make you think you are a better driver than you are.

Speaking of M3's, I passed one at a track day in a Miata. The M3 driver yelled to his passenger, that Miata better not be Stock! Yeah, I had a 4-pt. roll bar, and some sway bars

We have another local instructor who likes to pass people in a white Dodge minivan

The AX I went to at Cal earlier this year, the guy with the old beat up 2002 wiped most people up, not because the car was faster but because he knew how to DRIVE that thing!!!
