Misfire opinion
Since adding the jb4 G5 iso to my car I've had misfires starting on cylinder 4, then on 5 as well and finally a multiple misfire code. 3 codes, 1 for a misfire on cylinder 4(only code for couple months), then misfire on 5 and a code saying multiple misfires.
Car has new OEM spark plugs with 4k on them, torqued to spec when installed. no dielectric grease I've swapped coil packs and did not get a following misfire, it only happened with cylinder 4 to start. I swapped #4 out with a new coil and still had the misfire, couple weeks later #4 was misfiring more often and soon after other cylinders or maybe just #4 & #5. When the misfire started, car would stutter and shake and if I didn't let off the gas right away it would run rough and stutter till it was turned off and back on. After a couple months of trouble shooting(and waiting for weather to break) the problem worsened and my check engine light stayed on even after the car was shut off. My car is CPO and it's currently at the dealer for another problem cc-id 370, probably the transfer case positioning motor. I removed the jb4 and cleared my codes before taking it in, thinking I would be able to reproduce a misfire on the drive over to enable my engine light... well i had no luck, I did have rough idle(typical), but no matter what gear or WOT, i couldn't get a misfire that triggered my engine light. While running JB4 map 0, the misfire was still happening... I was hoping to get the problem resolved under CPO, but now I'm worried they wont do it without codes to read. My CPO is up at the end of March and i guess I'm just looking for suggestions on what to do. Car seems to be fine stock(without JB4 hooked up), with jb4 it misfires like crazy and i would rather not pay $1100 to change the injectors if I don't need to. Am I running a fine line for my injectors strength? Maybe the BMS DCI(pulled for service) is adding just enough extra power to cause the injector failure while running map 0? Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed! Car is 2008 335xi N54 E92, BMS DCI, JB4 G5 iso, BMS OCC |

Dealer Report:
They found a misfire code on cylinder #5, but after clearing it they couldn't recreate it during a test drive. They moved on to my CC-ID 370 code, which led them to replace my valvetronic motor and if that doesn't fix it, replace my steering angle sensor. Could a valvetronic motor failure cause misfires? I'm hoping some power may be restored after the valvetronic replacement and they will get some fresh codes for my misfires... is that possible? |

I've updated the firmware several times, don't think I've ever uploded the wrong firmware(n54tech/n54 G5 ISO firms). Can't remember the last firmware I uploaded, but it was one of the 27.XX firmwares. I would play around with settings(Base Duty & DWP) to smooth things out and switch between map 1 & 5, but it never mattered what Map or setting I used.
Did you upload firmware for another engine type? |

Since you ruled out the coil it's probably the spark plugs or injectors. Were there any other codes with the misfires like 02 Sensors? Also, what were the conditions when the misfires happened; cold, just at operating temp, hot, after or during several high rev pulls, etc. You could look at the number 4 plug to see if it's white (lean) or black (rich). If you are getting additional codes and the plug looks normal or black try colder range plugs. If the plug is white it might be the injector.

Thanks Logan. Put the JB4 back on and have experienced some light misfires after the car warms up and I go medium to WOT. I have never got an O2 sensor code. I'm going to take your advice and pull #4 & #5 plug and see what's up. I'll also post some logs to see if anyone can help me diagnose. Is there a setting I could adjust on the JB4?
Got the car back from dealer, they wouldn't address any misfires issues due to the stock setup not misfiring or throwing codes... frustrating! Also, they initially said they were replacing a valvetronic motor(I didn't think turbo cars had one) and when I picked it up, they corrected that statement and said is was the transfer case positioning motor. My car has rough idle surges of ~100 rpm and long cold starts (~2.5 seconds). Car shows P10E2 (2DD6): Valvetronic servomotor, position sensors Mods: I installed JB4 briefly. got rid of it. Here's what my mechanic had to say: "Disconnected connector for actuator/sensor and inspected for presence of oil. No oil found inside though there is oil around the exterior of the connector which will not affect operation. Suspect failed eccentric shaft position sensor/actuator unit." |
