E85 question

So I have a 335i n54 with mhd stage 1 and dci. I was wondering if it's ok to just fill with certain percentages or full e85 without changing the tune. I don't need the power right now just saving money would be awesome!

Cali gas is getting expensive now. $3.31 for 91 at arco.

any money saved by the lower priced E85 would be more than offset by the reduced gas mileage

^ Yep, exactly.

You'll be gassing up more frequently with e85. With my daily commute, I used to have to gas up every 3-4 days with e30. Currently gassing up every 5 days with straight 91

Ok well that makes sense. Been reading how it needs more fuel. Ok so then what would be the max % I can run without LP or HP upgrades?

I know it's all about what my logs read, still trying to learn how to read logs.

10% Ethanol to be conservative on stock LP/HP
Some guys are running 20% on stock with no issues though it just puts added strain on the LPFP

Way back then I used to run the 93 octane maps with a few gallons of e85 just to offset the shitty 91 cali fuel and my data logs looked good. This was with Cobb ots maps. Still running it here and there but sometimes I use the Cobb e30 map.. I know, I'm too lazy to switch to MHD lol

With the way gas prices are it almost would be cheaper. E85 is a dollar cheaper per gallon

It's all relative...simple mathematic equation once you have the price of each fuel type.

As mentioned above, my E60 OTS map uses ~20% more fuel compared to the Stage 2+ 93 map (19.6 MPG vs 24.5 MPG, respectively). Price per mile ends up being the same at the end of the day given the cost of 93 and legit E85 in my region.

Well obviously...as already mentioned, not everyone has access to cheap E85.

Wow at a dollar off per gallon that would definitely offset the reduced fuel economy.

I guess tuning your car and running E85 saves you money LOL

He did the math there for you.

Definitely not all hwy driving, mixed driving. If it was all hwy driving and people do get 30+ on e10, then it would be 25mpg on e60 for all hwy.

30+ mpg on E ??? never heard anyone gettin that mileage on a tuned 335i that runs e ... for that matter even on a stock 335i

i guess its time to look into why am i gettin sub 20mpg even on stock map...what could be the culprit for gettin bad mpg?

So back to my original question. Can I run e85 or maybe a percentage of it without tuning for power? I'm talking stock levels of boost. I know I'd have to tune for it but all tunes are about making power.

30mpg on E what? Our standard pump gas is e10. Anyway, IF the car is running properly and if the fuel banks have not been fked with, doesnt matter tuned or not, when cruising on the hwy you are sub-100 load, i.e. NA most of the time. Under such load the afrs are mostly 14 or so and 30+ on e10 93oct is no biggie. When i was stock, once did an experiment- set cruise control to 65 mph on our way to NJ. Car recorded almost 34mpg with e10 93. This gives you an idea.

I would not do this w/o mhd logging. E20 or so doesnt hurt only if it can be logged and checked.

Ok I'll try it out. What parameters am I to be keeping an eye on? And say it's no good what do I do just limp to a gas station and fill?

I would not..

Only way to run E85 properly / reliably is to have a tune that is optimized for it or a tune that reads fuel parameters..

Without that if you overfill you may get stranded..

Alright guess I was bitting off more than I could chew at this point. I don't even have FMIC yet. Mhd and dci.
