I adhered two magnets to the dash and two magnets to the mount, similar dimensions as the ones in vladmurrys link. One of those magnets would have been enough but having both made the mounting very solid. What issue are you having with the magnets?

I don't want to risk any adhesive ruining my dashboard over time so I'm trying to get a more seamless look. Have some mid strength neodymium magnets coming in tomorrow. If it works I'll let you guys know.

I have been looking at this thread and trying to get my project together for the past few years now (got married etc.) !!
My plan was something similar, top dash mount instead of in dash install. My plan differs a bit and a little more complex. - use a wireless charging board (aliexpress etc.) - no surrounding frame from the mount and use magnets to hold it to the wireless charger. This adds the benefit of not fiddling with wires, angled usb etc. And you reduce the bulk of the mount/frame wich makes it look even better. Also, that would reduce the limitations on the 3D printer since you don't need to go edge to edge! Fixing the mount would be through magnets embedded on the bottom side of the mount near the rear of it. The other magnets would be on the bottom side of the centre speaker grill. The front would be similar to the mount here, a type of hook into the groove of the dash. Also, I already bought a CIC iDrive controller and sent it to a friend trying to turn it into a bluetooth controller. It would be great if we can get a 3D printed "adapter" mount for the iDrive controller, to put it directly inside the oddment tray instead of having to buy a whole centre console trim (saves you about $170USD). Tune2Air wma3000b for music streaming and supports steering wheel controls. And of course Tasker app to do many of the software side things. Last edited by gamesfrager; 03-04-2018 at 07:22 PM.. |
