My F250 does get the sniff test, but only because the truck is greater than 8500 GVWR. They don't put trucks greater than 8500 GVWR on the dyno, so they do the tailpipe test like in the old days.
It is true that my truck is OBDI not OBDII. Years ago when it first came on I had a person tell me that AirCare can't fail me for a Check Engine light. Unfortunately I don't recall who it was, and I don't know their reasoning, but because of it I have never worried about having a lit CEL. And, I have never been failed for it being on. Reading the codes, I believe the CEL is on because I have a bad EVP sensor (the position monitor on the EGR valve??). But to be honest I don't recall exactly what the issue is. I sure would like to know the truth about the CEL and whether they can fail for it. thanks, michael. Quote:

Update: I failed. No sniff test just electronic diagnosis. I gotta go to a State Emissions technical center now. If I was to do it over again, I'd run the factory map, complete the drive cycle, and take my chances.
