I will give you my experience but I was a first time buyer as well so it might not be worth much. Basically what I did was I called around all the dealerships in the area about 6-8 spoke to someone in sales and got them to email me a quote. I made sure to call on Skype as to not give out my phone number and dealt with everyone over email. I managed to get a few quotes lower then the one I had received speaking with my local dealer a few weeks before. When I went in I told him what my best offer and financing was that I heard from other dealers and they matched it without much hassle. I ended paying a little over $1K over invoice. While I know I could have probably gone a little lower I didnt think it was worth either of our time over a couple hundred dollars. Also there was a 1point drop in the financing since I was first in so my monthly payments went down significantly. All in all I was happy and they seemed happy.

If you want to chase invoice with them you will certainly find dealers willing to do it, however you have to decide what your time is worth as well.

I went to the new car manager because I'm in the car business myself and negotiated a deal $500 over invoice plus the doc fee.My dealer is Baron Bmw in Merriam,Kansas.Pretty easy to work with and this will be my second car from them.

I negotiated 2000 off MSRP. I paid about 500 over invoice for the car.
