Head gasket diy questions.

Hi guys,

After removing my turbos a few months ago I noticed a few oil leaks here and there.

During the reinstall I've decided to remove the engine and check for leaks.

Im trying to find a diy for the head gasket as a just incase.

Has anyone got one or has done one.

Any pointers?

Alternatively thinking of just dropping the engine off to a shop.

You're wasting your time, headgasket failures are very rare and more likely to cause an issue through improper installation of a new one.

Just replace all the common stuff like the valve cover, oil filter housing and thermostat housing gaskets, and make sure theyre torqued correctly. Sump gasket as well if you have the subframe off already.

I changed this already Dr j.

I had smoke. Coming out from rear of hood and changed valve cover. Oil filter too. Changing turbos now so thought id remove and have a proper look. Easier to install turbos too and might as well change rear main seal.

Thoroughly clean the entire engine, take it for a drive then thoroughly check it.

Beyond that lol. Radiator support is out. Engine out tomorrow or early next week most likely.

With 150k kms I think it's best to do the head gasket. I think I will get worx to do that bit.

Usually smoke from rear of engine is from oil dribbling down onto the turbo or exhaust manifold from a rocker cover gasket leak. Pinched seals in the back corner are not rare. Or warped rocker cover?

lol.

if you honestly think you need to change head gasket because of a leak. you might as well rebuild the whole engine coz the fuel tank got low.

I've stripped down 14 n54's never have i had one with a head gasket drama. The engine in my car has seen 35psi for 18 months and has over 230k on it and the headgasket still aint got a leak.

if you had a really bad valve cover leak and you fixed it, I can near on guarantee the smoking is coming from the wastegate solenoid heatshield. It traps oil inside and when it gets hot starts leaking down onto the manifolds again. rebuild a complete engine n54 and when back in the car had smoking from oil hitting exh mani on dyno. pulled that plate off and although couldn't see anything that could cause it, put the heat gun near it and sure enough oil dripped out. replaced it and never smoked again.

Decided to get a workshop to do the head gasket. Too much time and effort would have been invested to just fugg something small up lol.

So....
I'm ordering parts.
So far I have
Head Gasket
Timing chain (since we already there)
Head Bolts (recommendations apart from oem?)
Head rebuild gasket and bolt set (ecs has a ready made one)
Anything else worth doing ?

Exactly what Duck said, i experienced the same issue. Old oil trapped in the heat-shield was causing it to smoke again after vcg replacement. Cleaned it and drove it like that for few days and smoking stopped.

I'm a member of multiple forums like many here and I've only once heard of a head gasket/head seal issue. You aren't likely to fix your issue but you are likely to introduce more issues. DONT DO IT iliketurtl3s !

Cams, valves and springs. Not oem.
Only worth pulling the head if your putting upgrades in.
