My 335d e90 turned off whilst driving
No warnings no lights just cut off
Not been able to start it since

Put it on the computer and the following codes came up,, see pic

I have changed the camshaft sensor but with no luck it is not starting

I have taken the inlet manifold off and the brake servo

I can now see the chain, when i try to crank it over, i can see that the chain looks stuck,, its not turning when trying to crank it over,, it seems like the chain is jammed

Any advice on what this could be??

Thanks

So you are looking at the timing chain and it is not moving when you crank the engine?

If I am not mistaken the timing chain is rotated by a sprocket that slips on to the front of the crank shaft. That sprocket is driven by a "key" that sits in a slot in the crankshaft (#2 and #3 in image below). It sounds to me like that key has sheared of and the sprocket on the crankshaft is no longer turning. What has caused this key to shear (if that is what happened) is of great concern.

Looking at the timing chain pics it looks like the chain from the crank goes to a high pressure pump and a second chain goes from the pump to the cams (see pic below). The sprocket on the pump could have come loose also but its probably the crank shaft key.

Thank you for the info i will have a look at this and get my mechanic to investigate to see if he can see anything, will keep you updated

i am going to take a guess and say that these are interference motors? ...

i am going to agree with the broken key or even the HFHP chain.. given that it has a "rail pressure monitoring on engine start" i would think that the HFHP is not spinning as well, which would point back at the crankshaft.

What causes the oil pump to break? Is it common at a certain age or distance? If so maybe then it's a good idea to do replacement, but I'm confused why the oil pump would be driven by the timing chain and not is own chain?
