2012 E92 Aftermarket Headunit

Hi,
I recently purchased a 2012 328i coupe. The car is not equipped with iDrive or Nav, and has the HiFi audio option (676).

I'm 100% happy with the audio quality of the stock system, but I'm currently exploring options that add a navigation system, ideally through Apple car play. I know there's tons of threads on this, but a lot of the information is from several years ago, so I hope you don't mind the question!

My preference is to replace the factory head unit with a single DIN pop-out LCD unit. Has anyone tried this?

From what I'm reading, removing the factory head unit will break compatibility with BMW's repair computer. Are there any aftermarket head units that retain this compatibility?

I don't think there are any that retain it .
Some mount the original in the trunk or put
a connector there so it can easily be plugged back
in.

I'm not an expert on BMW's. I'm totally new to this brand, I'm used to messing around with VAG, but I'll tell you what I do know..............

1. Those popout LCD screens look good and are kind of stylish, but are unreliable in my experience. The mechanisms are a real problem. When I was 17, I worked in a pretty popular British car shop, renowned for high prices and a lot of crap products...... anyone English will immediately know who I'm on about. Anyway, we sold a range of those LCD popout radios, and I reckon we had at least one customer return a week. It wasn't exclusive to the cheap brands either, there was a Pioneer one that they subsequently pulled because it was so unreliable. It's almost always the mechanisms that fail. Most customers drove around with the LCD screen permanently out. In that scenario, every bump, hard pull away and braking that you do, is completely absorbed by the mechanism as that's the weakest point. We also got the occasional return due to dirt, dust inside the mech and then they slowly grind to a halt. If you do decide to get a popout, my two biggest suggestions would be:
- Don't drive around with the screen permanently out. Use it for sat nav and what not, but if you do drive around with it constantly ejected from the unit, you will potentially run the risk of what I've described above.
- Get a warranty. All of the customer returns were replaced for free under warranty, so make sure you get minimum 1 year, but preferably 2, so you get your moneys worth.

2. More importantly, am I right in thinking the E90's don't really play all that nicely with aftermarket stereos unless they have a CANBUS decoder? You'll need to think about then when making your purchase. I've recently fitted a 'made for E90' unit by Xtrons. I think it fits the E92 as well. It does everything you need (and more) and really didn't cost that much.
