Clutch switch?

My 320d has developed a strange issue regarding the clutch switch. When I depress the clutch and hit the ignition, sometimes it clicks but doesn't start. At first I thought it was the battery or the power distributor, but I've found that knocking the gear stick to the left seems to initiate start. Anyone else have this issue? I've searched all forums and it seems as though it's unheard of.
Thanks in advance.

You are in the stereo and bluetooth section of this forum.
Don't know if its and issue but we didn't have a 320 in the US
till the F30 series.
There is a Diesel and UK sub forum here also.
