Best aftermarket EGR Cooler for install
Folks, I need to replace my EGR cooler. Have my CES and the tech said that I need to replace the whole EGR.
I don’t want to do the EGR delete but rather try and replace the eGR. The OEm cooler is 800. But I found some aftermarket also that are around 300. looking for advice on which aftermarket EGR should I use. Between Behr and Dorman, is one better than the other? And can I use either or do I need the factory OEM? Appreciate any advise. Thanks |

Thank for the offer and advice. I was trying to see if one brand is better than the other. Behr is cheaper than Dorman but didn’t want to put something in that was crap for quality.
I just bought the car a few years ago. Didn’t realize the issues with the EGR/delete till too late. First BMW and diesel. The car is awesome. Blows past almost everybody on the road. But the repair costs are killing me. I drive it a 100 Mile’s round trip for work so can’t do the EGR delete. Anybody happen to know where there might be instruction on how to change it out myself? The 2 shops I went to quoted me $1300. Dies the EGR delete create a lot of smoke exhaust? |

I'm wondering what you mean by saying you cant delete the egr since you drive 100 miles a day...
Whatever the answer, here is a link to a thread coveringany of the steps towards EGR cooler removal: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=969420&page=2 Your $1300 quotes seem very high, even if the part costs $800. It's less than a two hour job. Seone who's done it before could probably do it in under an hour. Good luck! |

Poor use of words on my part about ‘can’t delete’. It’s not that I can’t delete the EGR but that I would feel like a d*** for the increased Nox because of the distance I do every day. I know that big trucks are much bigger polluters than our cars but not comfortable with it. If the commute was shorter I would get rid of the EGR/DPF in a heartbeat. The thing is almost designed to fail, make the dealer more money, and screw up the engine at the same time. I didn’t find much on the boards on whether deleting the EGR/DPF but keeping the SCR would keep the NOX reasonably low. Any experience on that? If replacing cooler doesn’t work or I decide to keep it as a weekend/backup then I will do the delete. Besides which, figured deletion make it harder to sell later if I need to. |

It doesn't exactly answer your question but this thread is from earlier in the year when a similar topic came up. Edit: I should also add that if you delete the dpf but run the scr, you will clog the scr in no time. Put another way, you can't. Last edited by charlie fairmont; 06-22-2018 at 10:09 AM.. |

I'm not sure about choice of brand in this particular application, but in other applications in many BMWs, Behr is considered a good choice. I know I've had good luck with them in terms of fit and functionality.
That being said, I'd remove it. |

Sorry for not being more specific. I meant that if you remove your DPF, the SCR filter/cell that is aft of the DPF will become clogged. The SCR reservoir (DEF tank) will not be affected. Your SCR metering valve won't be there if your DPF is gone because the metering valve is installed in the ass end of the DPF.
