5 starts, then no start
So I recently inherited my girlfriend's 335d after it came time for her to get something larger for her business. I had blocked and bypassed the EGR when she first got the car and left everything else alone. She ran it until it finally had a no start condition diagnosed at BMW for emissions equipment with 93k miles. Since then I took it home and gutted the dpf and scr, removed the def tanks, did cbu clean, got a stg 2 tune, new AGM battery coded and registered, did vac lines, some other mechanical crap. Since then I've had the car back up and running, no hard codes thrown, goes like stink. The problem I'm having now is after 5 times starting the car will then not start the 6th time. It's been pretty consistent at that number. If I leave it for a day it may start back up. If I disconnect the battery for a while, it will usually start back up. Then it's a countdown to 6 again. I have 1 code on inpa, I'll have to look it back up, but it came up KOMBI fuel rail pressure on startup. That's all there is for codes, and on searching I'm not sure though seeing anything stand out. I haven't done the fuel filter yet, was planning on doing it at 100 with trans and whatnot. I have checked the connections on the lift pump, those are fine. While I haven't been able to check lift pump capability with no start condition, but it flows when checked during start conditions. Anyone every experience something like this?
My best plan so far is to see if I can replicate no start in the garage, then check for lift pump flow at that time. Might as well put it up on Jack's and do the FF while I'm there. I'm open to any thoughts at this point. Thanks guys I should also say, I'm a super novice with coding and diagnostics software. I tried getting it hooked up on inpa again after a re-install and I think I somehow I have the wrong ECU files even though I had it working previously. |

The no start came before the tune, so I don't wanna bark up his tree quite yet.
I got a chance to diag a bit more as it wouldn't start leaving work tonight. So I pulled the lines at the rear of the engine bay and wasn't getting fuel. Popped the rear seat side bolster to get at the relay module and it was HOT! Opened it up and looks fine, nothing melted, but I don't have any torx bits with me to look at the underside of the board. So I let the unit cool, popped it back in after maybe 5 minutes, and it fired right up. I'm thinking at this point I found the culprit and the other information about battery resets and amount of start times may be just coincidental to my driving routines. I also found the code from INPA - KOMBI A559 DDE@ Rail pressure monitoring on engine start Which to me sounds right. If the module isn't providing fuel at start up then it would have a code that this isn't happening... |

I ordered a new module and am searching about coding it. So far I've only coded for a new battery so I'm trying to be careful with what I'm doing in there. |

So I replaced the EKP module. Had it programmed by a local shop. Ran it 500 miles over 2 weeks no issues. Until Tuesday. Got in the car and moved it for parking at work. 5 minutes later I hop in and it just cranked and cranked. Just like before. I pulled the new EKP and it was hot. I could hold it, but another few degrees and it would have been burning. Temps have been the better part of 90 degrees here lately, though. Anyway, cooled it down, threw it back in. Still no start. Opened and closed the door hoping for a system prime a few times. Nothing. Left it for 30, came back, and it fired right up.
So I guess I am looking at what else may be suspect now. Throw me your thoughts. I'm not getting an SES light. From what I've read maybe a crank sensor? I may be taking a new position soon requiring a significant amount of travel and I want to do it in this 335d! |

You got a high current code, replaced the EKP and its getting hot (probably still high current?).
I would look at wiring downstream of the EKP, namely the fuel pump, FP relay and its grounds. Last edited by Owen81; 06-22-2018 at 02:56 AM.. |
