335d California owners
So I just bought an 09 335d in pristine shape, actually looks like nobody ever even sat in it let alone drove it! Anyway, I wanna ask a few questions on what you guys have done in California for these things with all of the crazy smog laws.
I am having straight pipes put in tomorrow after the def filter and doing the normal wheels window tint etc. with what we have to work with I know there’s a couple in line chips you can put in them that are not detectable by the smoggers but what else? ![]() |

I would leave the exhaust alone.. straight pipes after the SCR wont give you any additional power or make a noticeable change in the exhaust tone/noise |

You still need to smog so removing the scr will make you fail anyways

Mostly removing because it’s a heavy mess back there and my friend owns the shop so it’s free. I have listened to a few clips though and it does produce a bit of sound mostly some turbo whine so that’s fine.
It’s a fun car and will do a few things to it, I found it actually looking for a diesel car because I get the fuel free at work. I have never owned a beemer but wow I love this car! |

Smog checks will be done via OBD2 port.
Any sensors showing faults or not ready will be a fail. A check engine light on your dashboard will be an automatic failure. You cannot clear the codes and go to have your car smog checked. It simply does not work that way. Any mods you perform on your car could potentially fail the smog check by the visual inspection. Anything you do will have to be done in such a way that will not be detected either by visual inspection or OBD2 scan. |

I have read several places that the JBD mod is not detected? It’s hidden fairly well when installed, I am mostly asking if anyone has had one on when taken in for smog.

Correct.. that’s why I was telling OP to leave the exhaust alone, no need to waste $ when it won’t make a difference unless you do a full delete.

JBD + Sprint Booster + Methanol
I've been very happy with this setup and I even get slightly better MPG (up to 36mpg from 34mpg on an every-other-week 212mi. drive I do). |

So california smog works through the obd port. They just hook up a scan tool and check the monitors on the vehicle. If the monitors have passed then the vehicle passes. That being said, if your tuner knows what he'd doing and deletes the monitoring of codes on deleted parts ( alphabet soup ) then the monitor should run and the vehicle should pass.
Also in Subaru land there is a force pass monitor option.... maybe we can figure that out too. ![]() |

Giving bad information is worse than giving no information at all.
California smog check: OBDII Test Visual walk-around Hood popped with flashlight to look for a downpipe CVN is checked in the dmv database to make sure there is no tune on the car Basically, you need a tune that corrects the cvn and keeps the checksum clean, your tune must have the readiness monitors set, and you need a shop that is willing to not do a visual. Don't get sent to the state ref due to being provided bad info. |
