I guess, but let's just say you could do it yourself for half of that.

For part cost sure. But time is money. It's a pain in the butt to replace the waterpump and thermostat - especially without a lift. Took me about 4-5 hours start to finish. I'm definitely not doing that again.

Today got a "engine hot! Drive moderately" warning.
Is this the dreaded water pump failure? Any other signs I can look for to tell.me this is the problem and I should get the car towed to the shop?

Started hearing the fan run on and off every 20 seconds or so this weekend. Got home one night and before I shut off, the fan was running very loud for a few seconds. No light indication on the dash. Water pump?

read the codes. The water pump doesn't trigger a light (for whatever dumb reason). it's likely but not certain to be your pump.

I had another coolant leak I diagnosed today. I had hoped it would be a leaking hose. I had replaced the top radiator hose earlier this year, but this leak today had to be examined from below. The source of the leak was what I feared. The water pump failed again. I replaced the orginal one in November 2013. Then replaced it again a couple years ago. For the new replacement, I intend to purchase the original BMW parts that I did the first time, but from ECS Tuning this time. I am not certain of it, but I believe I used the VDO OEM pump the last time. Since one will fail as well as the other, is there a third option that has been found to be more reliable? I am really tired of spending on pumps and committing a day of work to install it.
