E91 upgrade to Bluetooth from factory USB
Hi,
Please bare with me as this is my first post on the forum, so apologies if this is in the wrong place. I have a 2009 e91 with factory USB which I'm trying to upgrade to Bluetooth. I've installed the bt antenna and mic and attached it all in to the MULF2 hi module under the boot floor. For the coding I've updated the VO in CAS and NFRM to include $620 and $644 and coded 2RAD to include Bluetooth and ULF as ACTIV. I have got the TEL option displaying on the head unit but it has 2 dashes over it rather than a phone symbol and the steering wheel controls are still inactive. I've also tried coding the full car through CAS in NCS expert and it falls over when trying to code the MULF2 - cadb error or something similar, cannot read module. So I'm a bit stuck as to what is wrong. Unsure if I've missed anything or not done something in the correct order, or done something completely wrong. Does anyone have any advice, tips as to what to look for before I revert back to what was in before and start again? I've read loads of posts about doing this and this seems to be approach to take although some do things slightly differently. Thanks in advance Al |

By bluetooth do you mean bluetooth phone or bluetooth music.
Even with a combox bluetooth music streaming is only possible with an idrive head unit and combox for an OEM solution. And Icom cable is required to code stuff on the Most Bus for cars made after 3/07 I believe. Also do you have an uptodate version of the coding software that has daten files beyond the date\software level of the car you are trying to upgrade and the modules and options you are trying to install. Try to establish communications with the mulf 2 by doing what was done in the following link. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1206870 Please report back if this does any good. The Icom question always bothers me on this. Last edited by ctuna; 11-24-2018 at 02:29 PM.. |

Thanks for the reply.
It's just Bluetooth telephony I'm trying to get working. The car doesn't have cic or idrive/navy etc. I needed to update the system files for NCS expert to v3.0 before it would read anything on the car, but once that was done, it started to read ok. The cable i have is k can ( I think) purchased this October, was told it would work with e and f series cars. I've read I might need to change the build date in VO, but also read it's probably only necessary for pre 03/07 builds? Sorry, very new to all this and thought I would start simple. The good news is I've not broken usb with what I've done so far! |

you do not need change VO build date if you already have post 2007/03 car
but you can try identification job in INPA for e9x job list to see if car see MULF2(ULF_HI) module also you do not have to add 620 option, it is for voice control in idrive, voice control in mulf2high limited only to telephone functions and do not require separate option

Thanks, I'll remove the 620. I saw that in another thread and thought I'd add it but it seems it's not needed, so I'll ditch it.
I'll also have a look at inpa and see if MULF2 is read there. Many thanks for the replies. I'll report back once I've made the updates |

You may find these useful for navigating and finding
stuff in Ista and Inpa diagnostic manual ista/inpa https://bimmerprofs.com/diagnostics-inpa-part-1/ https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...xo19teM9vkTF-C https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...7x8H3pN8h1fMuF https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...-P-actually-do |

UPDATE:
I've gone into INPA and done a read of all the modules and the ULF_HI is present and working OK according to INPA. I've cleared all error codes from the modules using INPA so should now be in a baseline state. I have also removed $620 from the VO so it's just got $644 included now, and reset the BLUETOOTH and ULF options in the 2RAD module to ACTIV. In terms of the head unit, the TEL option is now gone and it seems to be replaced with Tuner which I don't think was there before. Phone buttons still not functioning. Any ideas where to go next with this? |

Now with combox you can (Bn-2000) that's for the cic stuff though. I've retrofitted from mulf2 and 2rad (radio) to I-Drive cic and combox only way I was able to make it work without a icom. |

mulf2 also available via dcan cable, rad2 is working as a gateway to MOST
after you modified VO you need to perform SG_CODIEREN job on RAD2 and ULF_HI modules and , later, SG_RESET job on these modules

Ah OK - I've done the 2RAD but not ULF_HI.
Will that be same as 2RAD in activating bluetooth and ULF? I'll take a look at that and see where I get to. Thanks again for advice |

Current state of play.
I'm tried coding 2MULF in NCS expert but the module will not be read when I try to code. I can reset 2MULF but not read it. I looked for module ULF_HI but I couldn't see that in the list. Am I looking at the wrong module? Sorry if these are novice questions! |

Could this be an issue with DATEN files?
Looking in the E89 folder IN NCSEXPER/DATEN shows that the ULF2MOST.Cxx files are from 23/07/2013 Will I need to update the DATEN files and if so, where from? |

Looks like I've had some success - Telephone symbol is now present and active.
However, I'm unable to connect to the bluetooth from my phone. I need to have a play around but seems like I'm on the way... |

UPDATE:
The phone now appears to be activated on the head unit and it will search for bluetooth devices, but cannot find any. Similarly the phone will not find the car. Could it be the BT antenna is not functioning? It was a used item I picked up from ebay. Would it be possible to run more than one antenna via a splitter to test if it is the unit or the cabling? |

Yeah the MULF VIN is present via INPA and matches the car so all good on that front.
It just wont pick anything up. I did SG_RESET on the MULF2 (which it allowed me to do) prior to the phone function becoming active. Could it be the antenna? |

OK - I've got a bit further. Fitted a new BT antenna and the phone now c onnects and can make calls. However, the microphone doesn't appear to function at the moment. I'm not sure if that is because it doesn't work or I have located the pins in the wrong place, but I am making some progress.
Thanks to all for the advice and help. |
