E91 335D Transmission Question
Hey all,
I was hoping that someone many be able to help me here. I'm intending to keep my car for a while, but I wanted to know do I have to change to oil in the gearbox or do I have to change the sump and filter, then put new oil in it? Many Thanks |

I had this done at 75k miles by this company in Aylesbury:
https://www.staautogearbox.co.uk/ I got a company to do it as I don't have ramps to keep the car level, nor do I have an infrared thermometer to do the refill properly. This company also uses a machine to pump or suck all of the old oil out rather than just letting it drip out. I asked them to do the mech sleeve but their feedback was that it looks good and dry. They also checked and topped up the rear diff too.

Has anyone done this gearbox service themselves? Doesn't look too difficult and the whole kit with oil, filter and mechatronic sleeve can be had for about £160-£180

Its fairly straight forward but it’s very important you follow the correct filling procedure. Most don’t do this correctly and this can result in damage to your transmission. |

The fill hole is on the side and it’s hard to get a good angle at it, I used a pump.
You need a to read trans oil temp, I used my code reader. You also really need two people ideally other wise your rushing in and out the car. You fill it, then start the car and run it through P R D and I went gears 1-3 as well then when at the correct temp you fill again till a small stream is coming out the fill plug then put the plug back in and go. That’s off memory but gives you an idea why two people is easier but check the ZF how to which is online. One tip. Just before you put the plug back in at the correct temp and having gone through the gears (wheels do not need to turn) DO NOT turn the engine off Put the plug in first. I made this mistake and oil gushes out the fill point. Lucky for me I was in my car doing gears and temp and my mate was doing the filling lol |
