Exclamation 3- Series Service Engine Soon

bare with me,

I first got a Service Engine Soon light and the codes were P0014 and P0015,
I had both cam position sensors replaced , then I got P054b code. After that I had both Vanos Solenoids, the Tensioner, along with all 6 spark plugs replaced.
Also replaced the valve cover gasket because it was letting oil leak out and causing engine smoke.

with all of this being done I lost a lot of oil in the process and did add a quart while this was going on.

I haven't gotten to clear the engine light yet but i do hear a weird sound in the engine and also at idle, it almost sounds like a diesel or a low knocking sound. During acceleration its less noticeable and can't really hear it.

prior to all this I took the car to BMW and all they said was they ran a test and I needed the Vanos Solenoids replaced.

So basically I have done everything BMW has said to do along with other repairs and I still continue to hear an uneasy knocking diesel type sound. I have noticed it feels like I have less power than I did before all of these issues but I could also just be paranoid.

Basically my question here is what could this sound possibly be ? and would my SES light clear on it't own?

I do have a video of the engine sound that I am going to try and post.

If it quacks like a duck....walks like a duck....and looks like a duck.....it's probably a duck. Look for metal in the oil filter housing.

Has your dealer looked into the 10 year vanos extended warranty. That knocking sound might be a bolt backing out and hitting the cylinder head. I had a very similar sound and that turned out to be my problem. See the thread below.

That was the original reason I brought by car to the BMW dealership, because i was under the impression that vanos needed to be replaced under warranty, but instead they kept my car for 5 days and then told me it was only the "vanos solenoids" and not the part that of course is under warranty, what a surprise right?

Mind you, I have only had this car for 5 months and bought it with 103,000 miles and noticed the spark plugs have clearly either never been replaced or replaced maybe once,

well lucky or you aircraft style flters are dumb easy to check.

get the proper oil filter housing tool. remove the oil filter. cut it and then unroll the media.
You're looking for the most expensive glitter you'll ever possess, internal engine bits.

if there's glitter in the filter, something inside the engine is wearing itself to death. VANOS relies on good oil pressure in the top of the engine to work properly. So your VANOS issues may have been caused by low oil pressure, low oil pressure also causes engine glitter.
there's the possibility of the bolts as mentioned, also cam ledges.

Do not pay a BMW tax for the oil filter wrench. Use a Volvo one https://www.ebay.com/itm/CTA-VOLVO-O...72.m2749.l2649

If you own a E90 you are going to want to have BMW Standard tools ready to go on a laptop: https://mega.nz/#F!zw5V0IrD!08GgdgH0AtxZcWh62_76xA

You will need a INPA cable: https://www.ebay.com/itm/K-D-CAN-DCA...53.m2749.l2649

Taking a 10 year old car to the dealer is not a smart move. Find a Independent shop that specializes on European or BMW repair. BMW standard tools is the dealer level diagnostic software. If there are any faults with sensors or modules causing this this software will find it. It is much better than a basic OBDII scanner. Even if you are not replacing the parts yourself it will give you the knowledge to make sure you are not getting ripped off.

Many college kids run these cars on a tight budget. You just have to do a little bit of research and you can save yourself a boat load of money.

Edit: Take a video of the hood open.
