Brake Squeak on Slow Start from a stop sign
2007 335 Coupe with 20K on and I am in the shop for second time in a few months with a high pitch squeak from the brakes. Happens more when it is warm or after stop and go driving and can get pretty loud (sounds like the ice cream truck) and annoying. Its not when you hit the brakes but it is upon slow acceleration from a stop sign, stop and go traffic.
East Bay has been good about it. First time they said they replaced the pads etc and it went away....now, after it has reappeared they are saying it might be computer not releasing brakes fast enough after stop. Said they are working with the factory trying to find a software patch etc etc etc Any one else with similar issue? |

A common problem. It was happening on my car, too, but it seems to have gone away. Here's a thread on it: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48702

Happens to my car, i notice it alot when reversing, and i also think its coming from the rear right brake. I had my e-brake readjusted thinking it could have to do with that but nothing.

"BMW has no fix....yet"
I was told this when I went to pick up my car after 2 and a half days.
The repair order says "Confirmed that front brake pads are squealing after stopping and leaving from stop. Pads are being held on slightly. tried (sic) took front brake measurements and replaced front pads as per W. Walker till BMW has a correction for DSC programming" I called BMW so after I left the shop, the dealer did what they can I assume, and spoke with a nice woman on the phone who tried to tell me this not a regular condition but not abnormal...something to that effect. I simply asked her to look into and call me back but she needed to tell me if this was acceptable position for BMW to take as that would factor into my decision when the lease was up.... |

Was it wet out? Because I know BMW has this "self-drying" system that the pads rub against the discs lightly to dry off when its wet out.
I could be wrong. I heard it once when I was reversing out of a driveway, but that was when my brakes were wet from the rain/snow and I guess it was probably just drying off. |

Thanks for the info, keep us posted. Very common problem that has not been fully resolved. I have the same issue and would drop into EastBay if there was a solution found.

I've had this issue with my E92.. Took it to the same dealer three times until they managed to replicate the issue, and it wasn't even going forward, they heard it when they were pulling my car out It's apparently the brake pad sensors. I'm not completely sure if their explanation to it was completely BS, but they did something about it, and it hasn't done this for 15k+ miles on my car. They said that when one comes to a stop, and begins to accelerate slow, the brake pads do not completely release, just in case the driver has to suddenly brake again--quicker braking response I suppose. When this happens, your brake pad sensors end up rubbing against your brake disc, and the reason why it might happen after driving around for a bit, is because the sensor is metal, and it expands as it gets hotter after some driving..
I'm not sure if that was understandable.. or a legit explaination, but I'd just go to the dealer, and tell them to replace your brake pads and do something about the sensors rubbing against the brake disc.. Maybe someone can chime in on this. |

Brake Squeak on Acceleration from stop
It returned shortly after my departure from dealer, who replaced pads. 2nd time in 6 months.
Call to BMW got a response from a nice woman, Ally, who advised via message that brake squeak is from dust build up which happens due to "high performance nature of these cars". I feel much better now. So I have the dealer saying the brakes are not releasing from a stop, that the factory has told me there is no fix "yet" and the mfg telling me it is normal.......and my car sounds like a ice cream truck. |

BMW called me again today as a followup to the low scores I gave after the last service visit. (the scores were for them, not the dealer)
I told them, again, that I thought the dealership had been helpful but I was really disappointed in BMW if it was indeed true that there was a problem with the car that they couldn't resolve "yet". In the midst of that conversation she told me that BMW's customer service doesn't interface with the technical side; something to that effect...I offered that this made no sense and if so what help could she offer me? The only thing she could offer was to have the dealer call me when they get the fix from the factory. i called the Service Manager who was polite and offered to replace the rear pads to see if that would help. I think the dealership is trying but BMW doesnt know how to fix this. In the meantime, pulling away from a stop sign, still sounds like the Ice Cream truck is in town! |

Replacing your brake pads can only fix your problem temporarily, the reason why is because the noise is caused by your sensors making contact with the rotors when releasing the brake pads, but the sensors only engage the rotors after about 10% of the pad material has been worn down, before that the pad materials is thicker than the sensors depth, therefore there is no noise. The problem is the material the sensor is made of, because it expands with heat like said before. There is something that can be done though, and that is to try to wear the sensor out some so that even if it expands it wont make contact with the rotor when releasing the brakes and pulling away, but if your pads are still with a lot of material the noise would come back anyways and you just reduced the ability of the sensor to work right. So best thing to do is to wait a little longer until pad maybe reaches a 65-70% of material and then take care of the sensor.
