Suggestion:"donations Pot"
For the New Year I would like to put forward this idea and see the feedback. There are some forum members that really go out of their way to develop fixes and work arounds for our BMW"s. Saving most of us a lot of money, sometimes hundreds of dollars and more.Sometimes putting their own cars and software at risk.Without this help most of us would be going to the Dealer or a Mechanic for these problems. "Example" (Jaeger) for the code generator,(Ken) for informative fixes, (Chappy) for his Maps solutions just to mention a few. I would like to see a Donations account or something like that, so people like myself can make a small donation (just a couple of Dollars) to go to the person that designs a work around at the end of Year, or helps a person from start to finish "VERIFIED" with a solution. I would be the first to put my hand up to Donate as I know I have been saved Hundreds of Dollars just for the map fix alone. I understand this is a help forum and no one does it for the money or the fame, but I think many people would be more than happy to give back something to the community. This could be monitored by the forum mediators.

Sounds a good idea. Having been a part of something similar over on R3vlimited (within the e30 community) a word of caution; there needs to be someone highly reputable to collect and distribute the donations if it's not to end in tears.
There were a couple of times were significant sums of money were raised for specific causes on r3vlimited - eg. someone being ripped off by an unscrupulous body shop on a restoration. The community stepped in to raise funds to help them out with getting the car fixed properly only for the person collecting the funds to disappear into the night and delete their account (and yes, the person in charge of the fund raising was a highly respected forum member, and was a forum moderator who had been involved with the board for years prior). Even after a couple of years it hadn't been resolved, and I'm not sure if it ever was. The scam happened after several successful campaigns that had helped out community members previously. After that, as far as I know no more fund raising campaigns were run. |

It's a great idea until sadly it goes wrong.
As others have mentioned money brings out the worst in humans. The best way to ensure that doesn't happen is to take pledges up front instead of money. Once the worthy project or person is nominated people can then donate directly to that person. There's no opportunity for anyone to steal.

I'm pretty sure no one will really jump at the chance of expecting a couple of dollars here and there for the help or assistance they might give everyone else. Most of us are friends here and do it out of goodwill.
I actually paid for 2016 and 2017 cic maps and then gave them out to whoever needed. I didn't expect money back from each person and I feel like if I did then I would be a piece of shit tbh. |
