New Engine Value for resale
Hi All
I was wondering what extra value would you put on a 12 335is with a BMW factory installed new long block. Previous owner spun a bearing and had extended BMW warranty. They actually installed a new not remanned long block. It now has about 80K on car 12k on the new block. Thanks |

Hit or miss with value, or the perceived value. Any engine replacement scares off more people than it attracts. But the right person would pay more depending on how many miles are on the new one.

I came out of an E60 550i to the 335is so its a bit small. I was looking for a 435i but I bought this on a whime to see if I liked it and trust me i love the car. Just a bit small for a daily driver. I have an E46 M3 in the garage so have a small weekender.

Might agree a little on this about scaring people off but this is a "New" long block not rebuilt and done by BMW.

I guess my point is that this may scare away prospective buyers from ever looking at the car.
I’m not saying to lie about it; just don’t advertise it as a selling feature as the OP originally alluded to. |

How many years ago was the long block installed? The motor may still have the balance of the 2yr, unlimited mileage warranty, which you could use as a marketing tactic / reassurance for a prospective buyer.
Personally, since it was done by a BMW dealer, it's an asset in my book, as the gaskets/ ancillary pieces are presumably much newer than the rest of the car... |

yea but why was the engine replaced. First thing that comes to mind is poor maintenance or someone abusing the car ( not saying that is the case here) .
Second thing that comes to my mind is turbos and tranny , since the car was "abused" or "poor maintenance" , it would probably scare me away I understand there could be other factors, but I do not know OP... |

The only way it would increase the value to the general public is that it has a warranty.
Other than that, it will probably detract the value because the first thing the general public is going to say, "Well the first one had issues, what are the chances of this one doing the same thing?" |

The car was under warranty when the block was replaced and had 68K on it and now has 80K as stated in the OP.
As far as as additional warranty on it BMW does not transfer CPOs to the next owner anymore. They got burned to maney times is what I was told since it had three more months on the car when I bought it. The car was definitly not abused. The guy that owned bought it from his father who DD it. I went through he car with the dealer and couldnt find anything wrong but it needed back brakes and a battery. As far as if I was going to sell the car I would mention it for sure. Besides anybody who does a PPI on the car and checked the dealer info and or the Carfax it will come up. I think its worth a few extra bucks for sure since its a new block not remanned and delaer did the job. |

If the engine was replaced under warranty due to a known manufacturer defect or recall it would be priced the same as if it was the original motor.
If it was due to a general failure then it detracts from the value. Only time I can see an engine replacement being a plus for value is an OEM+ bigger or performance upgrade or a super higher mileage car with a new motor(even then its taking the car from being worth nothing to a few pennies) |
