Ceramic Coat Intake Parts
Is it possible to ceramic coat all the intake parts (air box, duct, manifold, etc.) so the incoming air would in theory be cooler? Would the plastic intake parts be able to take a 120C curing process for the ceramic coating?

plastic is already a pretty good insulator, and the airbox isn't really near anything hot.
if you want to do something about the elbow that's near the engine, toss it in the trash and replace it with a silicone coupler. silicone is very resistant to transfering the heat. if you really want lower IATs, then do the dinan style mod to the factory airbox and pickup fresh air from the bumper. but honestly I think it's most likely a complete waste of time from a real world performance stance. |

Work part-ime in racing and they have better stuff, but I did see that episode. Attached is a pic that isn't mine of an n52 and rolls of that stuff in a racing application.

Hmmm really? After a long run at summer temperatures, my OEM Euro airbox lid is too hot to touch!

this is the thermal conductivity of ABS plastic Thermal Conductivity 1.04 - 1.39 BTU-in/hr-ft²-°F now compare that with mild steel. Steel, Mild 26-37.5 BTU-in/hr-ft²-°F so yes, the ABS plastic the airbox is made of is a pretty good thermal insulator. especially compared with the steel that some cold air intake tube is going to be made of. |
