Chinese automaker Nio

What do you think about this car company? They make a pretty quick SUV and the fastest autonomous supercar, though not sure if you can buy it. The SUV is sold in China but they have offices in SF. Looks like they could give Tesla a run for it's money and they've been around for a few years selling luxury EV's in China.

Isn't this the Chinese EV company that several high-ups from BMW i jumped ship to back in 2015? I wanna say it is ...

:: quickly researching ::

Nope. That would be Byton, now a division of FMC (Future Mobility Corp.), partially owned by Foxconn (of Apple manufacturing fame), and in which the Chinese state (via FAW) is a major investor, so this company is plainly a direct competitor.

Eeeeenteresting.

To be honest, the last thing we need is another car maker brand. I think the existing brands need to be more creative in there products. Been seeing some stagnation other than self driving technology.

Nowadays one can't help but buy products made with Chinese parts but I make an effort to avoid as much as I can.

I think they can be good if they can get a mass market product to mass adoption. Kinda hard given the economics of car manufacturing makes it very hard for newcomers. It is kinda miraculous that Tesla made it so far.

For Chinese companies, they haven't even a gas powered passenger car approved for sale in the US let alone electric cars?

I think Nio is more of a niche product than Byton. Nio is going high end supercars where Byton is going for mass market.

Why should China get any cars approved for sale in US? our market is tiny compared to theirs. It doesn't make any sense to jump through all the DOT and EPA hoops to get a car sold in the US when you can sell more than you can produce domestically.

Not only that, but the be-all-end-all status car in China is a Buick -- one of the very few examples of a U.S. product being so coveted there that it officially (read: the State approves) dissuades the domestic industry in question from even trying to produce an equivalent in that import's market. Buick's state-owned parent company in China, SAIC-GM, even divested its majority share in the joint venture to GM a number of years ago.

Even so, the U.S.-market Buick Envision is made in China. So are a couple of coming Volvo imports. So is a Cadillac SUV (can't remember which one). And any Volvo or Polestar sold supports a Chinese company that, like many there, are at least partially owned by the government.

Whether they get in or not is a separate story, but I've been hearing about this for a while (mostly from reading the Tesla forums):

Chinese electric cars prepare US blitz in 2020 despite trade war
GAC, Byton and NIO push ahead with launch plans, eager for new markets

Although a couple days ago China cut the EV subsidies in half:

The Grand Tour reviewed the Nio EP9 recently. They loved it and it was one of the fastest cars on their track.

That said, it's not really a practical car that normal people can afford.

We bailed out the auto industry a couple of times and they paid us back. Tesla is getting subsidies or tax incentives to buyers but that applies to any EV I'm not sure if there's a rule it has to be produced here but probably it is as the Chinese built Tesla's are sold there but that market is huge and can support it. If they create Chinese jobs they are supported. In the past they had to partner with Chinese companies but the rules may have changed because of the negotiations due to the tariffs.

They also make a $60k SUV that rivals the performance of the Model X.

Well yes, but we are all waiting to see it in the US. Until these cars show up for sale here, who knows what it's actually like to drive.
