X3 was totaled!! So I bought an E90 Pics Included

So on May 1st my girlfriend was driving the X3 when an 18 wheeler rear ended the car. Geico deemed the car totaled as the repair costs were more than the car's value. Insurance ended up giving me a settlement amount of $5,900 for the 2007 X3 with almost 123,000 miles on it. Being that the transmissions on the e83 X3's are terrible(jerky), and the cabin is not as spacious as I initially thought, my lady and I decided we'd replace it with an e90 328i X drive.

We looked at a few, and the one we really wanted was black on black with 90,000 miles on it but when we got to the dealership the salesman told me it had some issues. I asked to see what codes were present and he showed me.(attached below) Had some codes for vanos and two DME codes. I looked under the car and saw fresh oil on the underbody tray so I ran. Didn't want a big project car. Ended up getting this silver e90, 110,000 miles, one original owner $4,999. Car is mint inside and out minus one scratch on the front bumper.

Under the hood is looks like theres an oil leak because the oil filter housing is pretty dirty, and it may need a valve cover gasket. But I got a 6 month warranty with the vehicle so I'm not too worried. Not to mention I had the same OFHG leak on my F30 335 which I fixed myself. The driver side mirror also over-extends when opened mechanically, which is a common issue these e90s seem to have. Going to try some quick fixes that i've seen on the forum tomorrow. Let me know what you guys think, and any other things I should look to fix being I have this warranty in effect.

Good start, after oil leaks next to go will be thermostat and water pump if that wasn't changed already. At 110k I did the serpentine belt and tensioner for peace of mind.

Also make sure you take it to the dealer and make sure all the recalls are up to date, they are free and they can also do a quick look over while they are performing the recalls.

That's a good idea. Hopefully the stealership will want to take advantage of the warranty and replace a bunch of things haha. I took a look at the belt last night and it looks a little worn.. no tears or fraying but definitely hasn't been replaced in a while if ever.

I would change all fluids to get a baseline for maintenance.

-Transfer-case uses the BMW fluid (1 quart)
-Transmission is the GM 6L45R (takes any Dex VI)
-Differentials take about a quart each of synthetic 75w90
-Power steering fluid is CHF11S


Sucks about the X3 but it did it's job and held up well.

I've never driven an E83, but these cars do have heavy steering. If it feels like it is binding, could be the u-joint is bad on the steering shaft. This happened on my 2006. It would tighten up only occasionally.

The E83 is pretty much a taller/heavier E91. Aren't the transmissions the same? Maybe they were calibrated differently?

I've owned both the X3 and E90 and it's pretty clear the e90's steering is noticeably heavier but I like it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the trannys are the same.. yesterday I felt some slightly rough downshifts from 2nd-1st and it reminded me of the X3... no where near as jerky tho

Maintenance records

So the salesman lied. He said he took the car to get an oil change and to be looked at before he delivered the car to me. When I took a look at the service record receipt, it's dated 8/27/18 lol son of .... Now I'm not sure if they changed the oil then, which was at 106,5XX miles or at 110,700 which is when I got the car. Either way I'd rather use Liquimoly like I have previously on the X3 and the F30.

It also says differential/transmission fluid was "rep" or replaced i believe. not sure what REC. means tho. So maybe less fluid maintenance needs to be done than I initially thought.

Also got around to figuring out where the oil leak is from. Its not the OFHG, its coming from the valve cover which is under warranty thank God.. A lot of oil is caked on the side of the engine hence the burning smell
Warranty barely covers anything but it's better than nothing. i'll upload a pic of the leak when it stops raining here in NY.
