Help Diagnosing Ticking at Idle
About 6 to 8 months ago I noticed a rapid ticking noise that begins while idling after about 1 to 2 minutes on a cold start. Seems to be coming from under the air box. Goes away when revved and stops completely after the car is driven for a few minutes. Posting a link to a short YouTube video I uploaded showing the sound. Not the tick from injectors.
Doesn't affect performance but for the life of me I would love to solve the problem and get rid of it. Never happened the first year I owned the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

This might sound like a long shot but I'm only speaking from experience. Right under you're intake/charge pipe you have a fuel tank vent valve. When it goes to shit it will stick open and maybe sometimes close, eventually it will get so bad that when u fill up with fuel you will have trouble starting you're car at the gas station. After replacing the part (found on ECS) that ticking went away for me and solved all my issues. I had that issue for about 2 years before it went completely bad and I had long cranks after re-fueling....hope this helps, just Google the symptoms of the fuel tank vent valve stuck open...

I am pretty sure that is the HPFP purge valve - they all seem to eventually make that noise - dealer tech told me years ago they can replaced it it will come back and that the noise doesn't indicate any issue and they work fine even if they make the noise.

Injectors will sometimes be that loud. The one I recently changed out makes it sound like a diesel sometimes.

You check the boost solenoids? You may have a vacuum leak (lines or canister) as well...faulty solenoids will cause heavy ticking at idle and a weird surging sound like a deep hum intermittent hum will accompany it.
