SES light - 4BCD Code and Fighting Dealer - HELP
Hey folks - 2011 335d Msport 100% stock with 54k miles. Currently sitting at the dealer in service for SES light that had come on 45 days ago. I scanned initially and got :
4BCD/not present ![]() I scheduled service and dropped off with SA who was clueless. I'm in Seattle, WA and had been in there a year ago with another emissions code - DPF/SCR related and they covered/fixed under Federal 7/70 warranty no questions. This time they've had it for 6 days and they threw a new passive tank at it which didn't solve. Now they are suggesting the Passive Tank Evaluator Module? which is the only thing in line they say to cause the SES/fault still. $493.11 tax/installed. And they are saying this isn't covered as it's an electrical component and not mechanical so technically not covered under the emissions warranty. WTF. Same system - in line but not covered? Anybody? Yes I would love to start deleting but not there yet. Just suck it up and have em order it? |

Called BMW NA. Super ambiguous. They weren't very helpful describing actual covered parts. SA keeps calling it an Evaluator Module which I can't find listed anywhere.

I did. SA told me they cannot share that information. Excuse me? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard. I may have then lost my cool a bit and suggested they can rattle off obscure part names and expect the consumer to blindly accept that said part is faulty.

I think they are talking about the evaluation/processing unit (PN 16 19 7 227 394). That is what they replaced when I had the 4bcd. It fixed things for a while but eventually they replaced the def tank with the newer version. I think I got two "new" tanks from them over the span of maybe 8 months. Third time around, the allegedly revised def tanks became available and it's been fine for almost 2 years now.
I agree the dealer is being ridiculous though too often, that is what they seem to do. I would be livid if the joker refused to give me the part number. |

Evaluator I think is part of SCR/DEF tank assy? a) Car is still under 7/70 emissions coverage b) SCR system is part of the emissions system - i.e. it is needed to meet emissions. c) They have extended the warranty to 10/120 for the passive/active tank; it gets replaced by a revised version. d) They have extended the warranty to 10/120 for Nox sensor - which is impacts DEF/SCR performance This system has issues - both on X5d and 335d, That it has not led to a full recall - is puzzling. X5d has had more component recalled than 335d, even as there essentially the same system/components. There have been suspected issues with poor connection at DEF tank connector; affecting level sensing and temperature sensing. Also buildup at level sensor in-tank. New DEF/SCR tank should fix this, except for poor connection. At any rate, you should be covered by a) ~ d) Regards, **edit, also, seems repairs had been done - so also parts and labors are covered by BMW for 2yr - even if not in warranty - so this may fall under prior work** I believe there is no separate evaluator - it is all part of the tank assy |

I've reached out to the service manager directly to help resolve. I've asked them to order the part to keep the ball rolling and not delay repair (they've had the car a week now) but am hoping I can convince them of the related and integral part that the "evaluation module" would play in the SCR system as a whole.

SM pawned me off to another senior foreman. He was adamant that the "processing unit" 16197227394 is not covered. Told me that the entire car is connected and part of the same "system" so that they have to start excluding things at some point. Oh the nerve...
Now that I actually have a part number I'm reading that I'm not the only one whose been denied. Fail. |

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/arc.../t-827607.html Still puzzled how they claim this part is not covered. Without this part the system does not work as intended - probably MIL ON; MIL ON = emissions not met. If all else fails, possibly send claim to : www.bmw-rp.com Website that reimburses for specific items repaired at owners expenses, they have 4 topics covered - 1 of them related - BMW SCR active tank - this being a component related to it. Probably would help if RO were to list SCR tank related code. Good luck, *been in similar shoes and it was frustrating to deal with dealership |

Can someone let me know where this module 16197227394 located on the car? I'm getting the 4bcd code and will be changing my SCR cat in the next few weeks to eliminate the SCR efficiency code (finally). I never got that code until shortly the dealer replaced my DEF tank under warranty.

4bcd is the tank issue, covered 10y/120k... Read above
Run tests before you replace the scr cat. It could be the nox sensors going bad like here: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...1566886&page=2 Nox has extended warranty to 10y/120k mi |

I just had both Nox sensors replaced under the extended warranty a couple months back. The dealer couldn’t figure out why the car was still throwing the ‘SCR Efficiency’ code, so they submitted the case to BMW for review. BMW themselves said to replace the SCR cat. I declined the $2700 replacement and bought a slightly used factory SCR cat from one of the members on this site. I just haven’t gotten my ass around to putting it in just yet because it’s cold and I really hate laying on the ground when it’s cold, lol. I did read above on the 4bcd code, seemed like there was a module that was NOT in the DEF tank that caused this, hence my question. The dealer already replaced the DEF tank about 6 months or so ago. |

Update: I finally got off my ass and put in the new (well new to me anyhow) catalytic. Welded in nicely by a good friend. SCR Efficiency code is finally gone. https://photos.app.goo.gl/rRiutX1agE8Zwmzz6
However, as cool as that is, I still have the 4BCD 'Reducing Agent Passive Tank Fill-level sensor, plausibility' code that comes back on immediately after clearing it with my scanner. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this? I've filled the tank with urea, and that tank by the way, was replaced about a year ago under the extended warranty by BMW. They did not replace the pump or anything else that I can tell (I opened it up and looked) I think I read somewhere that connections could be reversed that could cause this problem and also there was a mention of an SCR Processing unit that mounts above the tank. I'm at a loss as to what to do on this, please help guys. Thanks! |
