caliper slide pins
I had that typical low-frequency judder noise like a train at speed and I thought, 'I bet a brake is running hot' - sure enough it was roasting (not smoking or smelly - I've known worse)
Once I'd eliminated the park brake I tracked it down to sticky slide/guide pins - sort of sticky in a rubbery sort of way. Anyway they were stopping the caliper from easing off. Temporarily i've cleaned and copper-greased them. What's the best lube? And should the pad grooves be greased as well? |

I think BMW advise is because the wrong grease will cause the rubber to deteriorate. I don't know if copper based falls into that category. Maybe a silicon based grease is acceptable?

Pad ears and backing yes, slide pins no. Replace your caliper bushings and you'll be set. The slide pins sit tight in these cars, which is normal.

So I wonder why are new sets of bushings and pins supplied with a sachet of silicone grease? - And most online video guides use lube as well

CRC Silaramic grease is the best silicone grease I have seen/used for greasing caliper pins & running a bead on the backside of brake pads.
Description: A synthetic, dry-film, ceramic lubricant formulated to reduce brake noise and vibrations by dampening all brake vibrating frequencies. Will not run off or wash out. Works in extreme temp ranges from -50 to 3000°F. Protects against uneven pad wear. Features & details: - Protects all moving caliper hardware, mating surfaces and backing plates. - Contains the latest rust, oxidation and anti-wear additives. - Provides lasting protection against friction, wear and corrosion. - Ideal for high performance or racing applications. Works in extreme temp ranges from -50 to 3000°F CRC 05361 Silaramic Brake System Grease - 5 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0091KCG0W..._4zMhDbY461SSS I use this once a year on my guide pins; I have brass sleeves & SS caliper pins from ECS tuning. You have to re-grease the pins once a year, if you go this route. |
