There are tons of people running N55 coils just not on this forum.
The metal bodied plug superseded all the old part numbers. (Even though the old ones are still available) The recommended practice is if you change one you should update all the packs in that bank of cylinders.

People have recently began using S55 coils and plugs in the N54

Part #: 12138616153 (12-13-8-616-153)

This is the OEM Delphi ignition coil that is the current replacement for some BMW 6 and 8-cylinder engines built from the late 2000s and after. BMW has made numerous changes to ignition coil part numbers in recent years but has approved this part number to work in the vehicles listed below. It's listed as a replacement coil for N20, N55, and S55 engines. In March 2015 BMW approved it for N51/N52 engines. This part number replaces previous BMW part number 12137594937

The interesting thing is that both the N55 and the N54 coil packs are listed for N52 if you dig deep enough on REALOEM.

They all will work. The thing to note is that real oem just gives you any parts that will work. They don't provide any info about part updates and replacements.

Even though you can by Bosch coils maybe even bremi. There are known quality / longevity issues with them. This is why the Delphi coils have superseded all the other coils. They are the latest updated parts.

It is the same story with injectors i think they are on revision 12
you can still get the old ones bur you probably shouldnt

I didn't see any n54s listed as compatible for these Delphi s55 coils on turners site. Are these the best and most current coils to use as of today on n54? I will be replacing all 6 and want to make sure I am getting the latest and greatest that everyone is buying.

Also bavauto has new "hi-performance" coils....now I'm really confused:

Yes they work great.

Just make sure you stay away from Delphi GN10328 they will work but you get this

Thanks...those look just like the bavauto high performance ones, or the delphi gn10328. What happened?

Not mine but according to AD engineering.

Quote:
The 10328s have a rubber boot tip that is glued on. It fits very tight between the spark plug and bore in the head. So tight that if you go to remove the coils after a month of heat cycles the rubber will come unglued and remain stuck on the spark plug.

It should be noted the the spark plug does not sit centered in the head bore. A non n54 coil will fit, but very tight on one side. It should also be noted that the 10328s rely on the detent to the top of the plug to hold them on. The top boot by the connector is very loose.
If you look at the pic the n55 coils are very close in design to the n54 original coils. Just make sure to install with a light coat dielectric grease in the boot.

Thanks, I've never applied dielectric grease to coil packs in the past. When you say "In the boot", do you literally mean on the inside of the rubber boot, or just on the tip? Sorry for the noob-ish questions, but this maybe helpful to other forum members as well.

There are other methods but the one i used is was to coat the end of a small piece of copper tubing about the size of a plug maybe a little smaller with Dielectric grease place in the boot and rotate.

Do not place any grease on the end just the sides and DO NOT touch the metal connector inside the boot. Use enough to coat do not use gobs. The purpose is to coat the boot so it does not stick to the plug. Cylinders 4,5,6 heat soak really bad because of the cabin filter tray it is a must for those. When i changed my plugs i had complete separation of the boot from the coil on cylinder 6 it was a mess.

If needed, wouldn't it be simpler to put the grease on the outside of the plug?

probably so

i already had one of these lying around. i personally prefer this method because you don't have to worry about the boot scraping the grease of on install. Rotating the pipe several times will give a nice even coat of grease on the inside of the boot and you can feel through the pipe if it is evenly coated or not

I have had a coil separate before. i don't want to go through that PITA again. I have the proper tools to deal with it now but what a pain

There is a bmw direct fit delphi coil. You can find it online with some searching. I just bought a set from fcpeuro for example. Paid about $40 each. Bosch is cheaper; you can find them for $30 each. But anecdotal evidence is that the delphi may be more reliable and bmw dealers who service n54, n54 and s55 prefer them. My 08 535xit original coils lasted 7 years and 95k miles but I am spending the extra $60 for something that may be better for the second half of its life.

I donīt want to reinvent the wheel but maybe a tip for newcomers to this platform... Delphi brand, for n55, cheap and direct fit...
