335d Excessive Idle Smoke until up to Temperature
Hello All, thought it would make sense to start a new thread rather than highjack someone elses ... I recently bought a 335d on 235k miles, great condition, full history etc. Was owned by a UK member on here and he used it to commute 40k a year to work and back
![]() From my understanding, it ran a DMS Automotive map for years, then had its DPF (Cat still in place?) and EGR/EGR cooler removed in November last year (& map adjusted to suit) as per the picture below: ![]() Untitled by Sir_Dave, on Flickr ![]() Untitled by Sir_Dave, on Flickr The crux is, it drives perfectly and pulls like a train when up temp, ie above 89oC, but below that is had a "misfire/rev up" on idle and smokes like a chimney. Initially i disconnected the MAF and the car ran far better/with no revup/smoke, so i bought a new MAF. When fitted, the revup/smoke issue came straight back. Doh ![]() Done some basic data logging with a piece of paper & Carly: Initial Cold start MAF on steady 40/41, jumps to 80 when revs increase, coolant in the 30's, lots of smoke. MAF on steady 40/41, jumps to 80 when revs increase, coolant in the 65's, lots of smoke. MAF on steady 40/41, coolant 88, lots of smoke. MAF on steady 40/41, coolant 91, lots of smoke. MAF on steady 45, coolant 88, lots of smoke. MAF on steady 50, coolant 95, minimal/no smoke. MAF on steady 60, coolant 95, minimal/no smoke. MAF on steady 50/52, coolant 92, minimal/no smoke. MAF on steady 60/62, coolant 93, minimal/no smoke. MAF on steady 51/52, coolant 94, minimal/no smoke. Warm start MAF on steady 54/55, coolant 83, lots of smoke. MAF on steady 60, coolant 95, minimal/no smoke. No smoke whatsoever with MAF unplugged, also no fault codes. ----------------- Did some more logging (with INPA) today, removed the engine cover to have access to the EGR etc: Nominal/Actual charge air pressue and rail pressure stay the same throughout. ----------------- Coolant up to 88oC EGR unplugged, MAF plugged in - EGR ASV forwards, MAF nominal 315 mg/hub, with actual of 320, lots of smoke EGR unplugged, MAF unplugged - EGR ASV forwards, MAF nominal 372 mg/hub, with actual of 495, less smoke, but still there EGR plugged in, MAF unplugged - EGR ASV forward, MAF nominal 430 mg/hub, with actual of 490+, no smoke EGR plugged in, MAF plugged in - EGR ASV initially backwards, then rocking forwards/backwards when it misfires/revsup, MAF nominal 315 mg/hub, with actual of 320, lots of smoke ----------------- Coolant over 89oC EGR unplugged, MAF plugged in - EGR ASV forwards, MAF nominal 495 mg/hub, with actual of 495, no smoke EGR plugged in, MAF plugged in - EGR ASV forwards, MAF nominal 495 mg/hub, with actual of 495, no smoke ----------------- To me it seems like there is something over-fueling related going on below 88oC, and/or if the MAF is reading sub 49(0)? I was also under the impression that when the EGR is mapped out, it stays put, so shouldnt be moving around all over the place?! Your thoughts are much appreciated ![]() Last edited by Sir_Dave; 07-22-2019 at 11:44 AM.. |
