Glow plugs aren't a factor once the engine is warm. So if you drive moderately hard for 10-15 minutes and then it still has a rough idle, it's not that.

That said, this time last year I had issues starting and a rough idle while the engine was cold. It turned out to be my glow plug heater module. The heater module is what controls the glow plugs and generates the current to drive them, kind of like the ignition coil in a gas car. The glow plugs themselves are just very simple resistance heaters and I wouldn't expect them to fail frequently.

I would be dollars to donuts you have an issue with one or more injectors, just like I do. The codes will probably give you a hint as to which ones. Look for which cylinders most often have the zero adaptation, smoothness regulator, and misfire codes.

They did mine under CPO, and I can't find the paperwork now. But I do remember that $2,300 number, because I was shocked at the time. Maybe that was just a line item for the injectors.

The smooth running controller cyl 2 came back. Everything else cleared since the carbon cleaning.

Got the work done today. No codes and holy crap does it run smooth. Might mistake it for a gasser.

It's also so much faster it's almost unreal. I guess I've been driving a 320d for a while now....

Total cost once I return the cores will probably shake out to about a grand. $426 for labor, $516 plus tax and shipping (both ways) for the two injectors. That doesn't include the initial diagnostic or fuel filter replacement, so more like $1300 all in.

car is at the dealer now, i just didn't have time to deal with indy shops. i don't really mess with fuel stuff on cars. plus if i did all that stuff and didn't fix it, i'd probably be tempted to put a match to it. i'll post back what they find.

So what turned out to be the issue for you, and how much did they ding you for it?
