The Garbage Truck Philosophy
"Garbage Truck.
One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.' He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so..... 'Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.' Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!"

Wise words that I'll admit I probably won't be able to follow too well some times.

in short: treat others how you want to be treated. and even if they dont treat you back as well as you did, just smile and push on.

Notice the entire thing is italicized and in quotes. . . so no, I dont think anything, but the Taxi cab driver who said that to his passenger must think so. And I dont think he necessarily means financial success. There are other types of success in life, and money is definitely not the most important one.

I think it's awesome. Most of the time people forget why they're chasing the kind of success they want. It's only a minority who makes an effort to be truly happy, and even less who are able to spread that happiness around.

Would the Taxi driver have been as pleasant if he smashed into the idiot who pulled out?

Probably not haha, matter of fact. . . . this whole story could just me a made up analogy. I mean, I do it all the time, I make analogies for ideas/concepts I'm trying to explain all the time. So, who knows. . . . .

Good point. I used to always stress about things and get upset. Now I've learned to be more mellow about everything and be more happy. Works for me...

One of the supervisors at work handed me a copy of this a few months back and I've had it sitting on my desk ever since.. Seems like this could be a good thread to share it in..
Attitude The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people will think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, or a home. the remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for the day. We cannot change the fact that people will act a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you.. We are in charge of our attitudes.

you know... outside the borders of the US, there are some places where success is not solely based on how much money gets direct-deposited into your account every week.
we are so trained into thinking that success is entirely founded on your job title, salary, and material possessions that we often miss the bigger picture. perhaps this taxi driver had a wife he loved, 2 kids who were respectful and intelligent, and he made enough money driving cab to keep everyone fed and happy... why can't that be a definition of success? just my 0.02... |
