GTS prices are about the same as they were when I looked 2 years ago. Great car. GT4 has a totally different feel and is manual only. I wouldn’t want to DD a GT4 but I would with a GTS.

- One more to-be-named variant will have an NA flat-6

Those of you who have driven a 718 and didn't like it: fair enough ... though I likely won't ever own another BMW because of my 718. (I've driven several flat-6 981s. Meh, in comparison. Sure, they sound great. I'd rather have the torque to outrun any 981 on a public road below 100 mph. Fair enough, eh?)

As for 981 resale prices: It's classic supply-and-demand, partially caused by the 718 shortage in the U.S. 718s have been haphazardly available here not primarily because of poor demand, but because of higher demand in other world markets, combined with a slew of other factors I won't get into here.

My advice, if you really want a 981 GTS: Wait a year. You'll save at least $10-$12k, if not more.

Thanks. I was primarily considering it because they offered me a really good price for my 2016 M3 with 25k miles. In a year with the next M3 out my car price will take a hit. That said I don’t plan to pay 70k for a 2016 GTS. I think 62-63 is more reasonable. Will see how it goes. Thanks.

I would be very surprised if cars with similar mileage are $10-12k less in a year. I've looked at 981 GTS for 3 years now and the prices have held very steady, especially for cars that are built with the more desirable options/colors

What is this shortage you speak of There are still new 718s on dealership lots that are more than a year old because they arent selling.

Is your budget 62-63 max, or are you willing to actually cross into the 70’s (but are unwilling to pay that much for a GTS)?

If the latter, you might be able to pick up a higher mile GT4 for around $75k soon. And by “higher mile” i mean like 12k miles...Porsche GT’s are so sensitive to mileage for a car that’s built to last, it’s one of the market’s great arbitrage opportunities.

Closer to 62k, i think I’d go 981 GTS. Even though the 718 is more capable, it loses a lot of things that made Caymans special. Kind of like when BMW went from E46/E90 to F30/80. IMO of course, although a lot of people would agree with me.

Not about budget as much but more about what I want to pay for the GTS. IMO it is overpriced right now and I would feel okay spending 62 on a low mile 2016. I would totally go for a GT if it were mid 70’s now but it’s not. Also the equation changes on what I an get for my M3 now vs waiting till January.

I did an extended test drive with a manual 718 GTS and It didn’t do anything for me. It didn’t feel special like the Flat 6.

Well I feel that 70k is unequivocally high for a car that retailed with desirable options for around $95k. I'm relying on memory here - so someone please correct me if needed - but Cayman three-year residuals are somewhere around 65%.

Residuals are not the be-all end-all of used car pricing, but do tell you that the manufacturer expected their $95k car to be worth around $6/k after three years and 30-36k miles

The primary reason they are keeping value is because of the NA flat-6 in them. Once flat-6 718s start arriving stateside in 2020, the prices should start to fall.

Because those 718s are dealer orders and are often optioned to near-911 levels, for one. Many of the 718 owners I know didn't want a 'baby 911'. They want a sports car.

The 718 isn't selling poorly. It's selling just fine, but mostly elsewhere -- and Porsche has to prioritize and meter output. The U.S. is not Porsche's only market. Not by a long shot.

Thanks for all of those facts, although it has nothing to do with a 718 shortage. The bottom line is there are plenty of 718s for sale right now both new and preowned. While Porsche may be retooling or otherwise cutting 718 production it does not mean there is a shortage. Demand does not seem to be outpacing supply.

Mind you, I am not dismissing the 718 as a fantastic sports car. But from what I see, there are more than enough 718s to go around.

I love the 981 GTS, but couldn't justify the $15-20k price difference from the S
I ended up finding a 2014 981 Cayman S with $18k in options that was basically a PSE short of a GTS and saved $20k over the next priced GTS. If I had an extra $20k lying around though I'd be tempted to get the GTS.

Side note: Porsche's pre-owned search tool now lets you add keyword filters. This lets you search for vehicles that have specific options by adding the option code to the filter.
