IAT increase during normal driving

Obviously under WOT the IAT's increases due to excess load on the engine.
But what about to during normal city driving/stop and go traffic?
I assume they should never be more then a few degrees above ambient temp unless under load even with a stock FMIC? Being in Australia we can get some pretty hot days here (+40 degrees C). I have never tried to log just cruising around but was curious as to if anyone had logged like this before.

IAT's will always increase under 35 kph. A 40c degree day in stop and go, i'm gonna guess around 65-75 degrees C of iat. But as soon as you get above 55kph your iat's should go down substantially

traffic is the worse for IAT's. 50F outside temp, sitting idling and it goes to 100+F

Now you know why people upgrade this to a 5" stepped or 7". A good FMIC will be about 20 degrees higher the the actual temp outside. A great FMIC will be about 10 degrees difference.

DCI's won't help your cause of decreasing IAT's. You are taking hot air from the engine bay & feeding the turbos. The importance of getting a great FMIC should be high on your priority list, I would think. Lots of fins per square inch. VRSF would be a good starting point.

Its a lot more than a few degrees with the stock intercooler

I already have the Mishimoto FMIC but its not performing very well when at WOT with the other mods I have. I'm leaning towards a VRSF one to replace but since I don't drive the car hard very much I'm having a difficult time justifying the cost of a new FMIC. Hence why I was asking if there may be a difference with a better IC under normal driving conditions

No, the best intercooler for performance will also be the best one for daily. More surface area and number of fins, the more it will cool. Simple heat transfer.

The one thing you shouldn't cheap out on with the car is the intercooler. Any near stock car can benefit from the best intercooler available.

Any of them will heat soak while sitting near still, but quality ones will be less.

They could go below ambient if it's cold enough and your on the highway long enough but typically they will only be ambient at best, usually with a good upgraded FMIC. Slow driving, traffic, and stuff they will be above ambient cause there isn't that much movement of air.
