I almost sold my car...
Hi all
So this year has been a good year. Work is good, life is good, and I got a thick raise. I almost pulled the trigger on an F10 M5 but didn't. In the last month, I did a lot of maintenance on my car. Coils, spark plugs, starter, and battery. One of my headlights is out so I bought some D1S HIDs cause I've heard good things about them. Here's the thing: I love the car, but I'm also getting that itch of getting something a little newer. My car is just shy of 100k miles, which doesn't scare me. It just means the longer I hold on to it the less it's going to be worth on the market. I know other maintenance things are going to be coming up in the future. I haven't done the waterpump, the fuel pump, and my turbos (that i just replaced a year ago, but don't cheap out on the replacement *cough cough Vargas turbos) are going to eventually need replacing. So those of you who have gone down this road, when you sold, did you regret it? Or was it a good decision? Hit me with the advice peeps. Love to all <3 |

I miss my ZHP, but I don't regret selling it for my current car. I'd love to have another one day.
My car is nearly at the same mileage as when I sold the ZHP but I plan on keeping it longer. I'm going to get to 150,000 and see how I feel at that point. |

Its all subjective at this point. The value of the car monetarily isnt going to change radically and, hopefully, the maintenance isnt going to come anywhere near what the payment would be on a bog standard 320, let alone an M5.
If you like the car enjoy the cheap insurance and lack of car payments, if the money is burning a hole in your pocket travel more. |

Work makes it hard to travel but I digress. I feel like I won't have issues with maintenance any time soon (knock on wood). And even if it all goes to crap, it's not too bad to get this car up and running so there's that. I've also but a good relationship with an Indy (shout-out to speedlogic in Fullerton). There's good reasons to keep the car the biggest being the money factor. No car payment is nice. With that being said F10 M5s are so cheap I won't be paying much more than I was when I was paying for my 335i. |

Wait until the next recession. Then hold all the cards at the negotiating table.
Are the F10 M5s reliable? I dunno much about those tt v-8s. N63? |

N63 is the biggest POS Bmw ever made, can't believe it passed their reliability testing. It's plagued with problems

If you have the space, my recommendation is to keep the 335i and get a second car, something very different. Like, a Lotus/Miata/Z4 (or save for Z8), or something else radically different... Motorcycle? Jeep? You get the idea
Don't keep the 335 in the hopes of retaining value, it isn't a collector's car. Keep it because it is fun to drive and enjoy the crap out of it.

That is always my assumption when cars become cheap quickly, maintenance costs. I remember E32 7s being dirt cheap after only like 6 years and every cool cat was snatching them up only to find it either had an un-recalled engine worst case or if they were lucky it was just the PO realized a brake booster was an $800 part that required a few hours of labor to replace.

I have that and honestly, it hasn't been all that bad. My point is if I went with "reliability above all" is be in a Honda not a BMW. |

I'm in construction, so I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma that I use throughout the working week. So I'm not even driving the BMW all that much. I've had it for almost 4 years, and I've barely done 20,000 miles on it. Pretty low use car. So that's why when people say "Maintenance costs" it doesn't matter as much because I am not driving every day. I thoroughly enjoy my 335i. It's nowhere near BMWs best car and it's a hell of a driving experience. What I can't shake is if I enjoy this car this much, imagine how much fun a proper M car is... |

If it suffers from the same issues, then you bring up good points. But, I literally put 10k miles every 2 years. Assuming that I do the same with this car, which I would because I would never DD a performance BMW, the maintenance costs for me are going to be significantly lower than the average BMW driver because I am not driving it all that often. With that being said, that is something to consider. Still in a rock and a hard place here... |

If I was in your shoes I would go for an E92 M3 or maybe test drive one of the G series M cars. I've driven a half dozen F cars and they all feel boring, but maybe you'd enjoy it, can't hurt to try one out on an extended test drive. Who knows, check Turo in your area maybe someone has an M you could rent for a weekend. |

Also, if you just want something "newer", maybe just look at retrofits. I added dynamic cruise control and an iDrive 6 system from a '17 M4 to my E91 and it felt like a new car again.

I would keep the car and add another for either hauling things or just for fun. You’ve invested in maintaining it so you might as well keep it if you still like it.

I know nothing about the M5 you are talking about but it sure does look good. Just from looking at pics I would say buy it and enjoy it.

I want something with: 4 doors A newer generation BMW M5 seems as the perfect step up IF I decide to get it. Not to mention it's significantly faster than my current car. |
