Oil leaking from the oil filter cap and/or housing will eventually cause the serpentine belt to come off. Once that happens it wads up behind the crank pully and pushes its way into the engine where the timing chains chew it up and spreads it through the engine. Oil pan needs to be removed and oil pick-up/pump needs to be cleaned after that. All because of a failed $15 gasket. As for the smoke all I can say is make sure your PCV system is working properly. That includes no cracks in valve cover and PCV/flapper valve are in place and working. An upgrade to an external RB PCV system solved my smoking issues. FIX the leak! I have been chasing my smoking issue for a year but I bought some Liqui Moly Oil Saver and it seems to have done the trick. Might not work for everyone but it sure fixed mine we will see how long it holds up.

I am also wondering if its just oil that is being burned up, I don't have a catch can and I know there is oil in my charge pipe.
