Dealer wants $6K to replace catalytic converters
Hey all, my car crapped out on the road today with a bad water pump and it got towed to the dealer. Dealer now saying that the cats are bad and need replacement. The car does have a Cobb tune on it, and I am wondering if that is what is causing the dealer to think it needs new cats? They had the car for about 2.5 or 3 hours before calling with this diagnosis.
(They wanted $1300 for a new water pump.) Thanks for any feedback I can get. |

Feedback: never take an out-of-warranty car, BMW or otherwise, to the dealership for anything other than recalls.

Tell the dealer to pound sand.
Order a new water pump from FCP Euro and VRSF catless downpipes. Have both installed at an independent mechanic. Sell the Cobb and go with MHD. |

An Independent replaced my water pump and thermostat for under $1K, so I’d find another shop. I seriously doubt there’s an issue with the converter but I guarantee it would be cheaper anywhere else.

Sounds about right, $1600 per cat and about 7:0 hrs labor at probably close to $200 an hour.
Just curious what year is your car? |

There's a possibility they diagnosed the car as needing new cats because of the tune. It might have some shadow codes relating to cat efficiency. If there really is a problem then go catless.

 But on a serious note your mechanic probably just pulled the codes on you car and saw some for catalytic converter efficiency/readiness related to your tune. Everyones advice is spot on, you can get the water pump done for less at an indy, if you are stuck, just get it done at the dealer and suck up the extra 400 it will cost. As for cats, they almost never have any history of failing (and all 4 together very unlikely), so your tune is most likely at fault and if there was any chance they failed, half the world has cats in their garage off their upgraded car, they are cheap and plentiful used

In my opinion, cat converter efficiency could be related to O2 sensors performance, so it could be that you need secondary sensors ...
But like others said; just deal with the water pump, get rid of the Cob and monitor. If all good, just plug in MHD. I also got rid of my secondary cats, car sounds better and engine breathes better. Good luck |

More likely the O2 sensors.
I have 200K on my cats.

You could do the water pump yourself. I did mine on ramps in my driveway. It's an F'n pain in the ass, but for just the cost of the pump and thermostat it's done, and you can buy the MHD flash!
