Smoking after rebuild and new turbos!

I rebuilt my engine due to cracked pistons, did the whole rebuild thing, new rods, pistons rings ETC. My car still smokes terrible, put dynamic auto work turbos and run 10w-60 up in the beast. For a few weeks it was fine, just noticed after hard pulls my car smokes but only during hard pulls. Its annoying. I also replaced my valve cover, put relocating inlets(relevance: removed crank case line). I'm lost. I did the work myself. I'm a bmw tech but none of this makes sense to me!
In case it's of any importance, I'm full bolt ons, gapped plugs I forgot what kind but I know it's the recommended ones lol. Run E40 blend, run MHD back end flash and jb4.

Did you inspect your valve stem seals when you installed those turbos?

Don't use 10w-60 in an engine designed for 0w-30. The high viscosity of the oil will cause excessive oil pressure at high rpm. Remember, pressure is caused by a resistance to flow. Flow is what gives protection and cooling. Go 0w-40 if you like instead, especially if you're somewhere hot, but other than that stick at the 0/5w-30 grade. Just get a quality oil like Amsoil Signature Series.

Yeah I am surprised you are a BMW tech and you use 10W-60 on the N54?

lol. BMW dealer tech doesn't mean anything in the aftermarket world.

But the engine is still stock. Unless he rebuilt it with much better internals but not really mentioned.

10w-60 would be ok for track use only. We don't know what the person is doing with their vehicle and I highly doubt oil grade is reason for engine smoking.

Yeah, I kind of doubt it's the problem, but it's the first thing to sort out.

10w-60 might be OK for track use, but it wouldn't actually be better than a good 5w-30.

I'll bet you a cup of tea at my place the 10w-60 is doing more harm than good for the smoking issue as well as the engine in general.

Only reason I used 10w-60 is because the owner from dynamic auto works recommended them for the turbos, I'm pushing well over 600hp, and I drive this car like a bat out of hell.

Your oil recommendation seems alot more reasonable, only reason I used such high viscosity oil was because I reached out to dynamic auto works and recommended such a high viscosity oil

I did inspect them, they did not look bad, I also cleaned my valves since the head was off, I replaced all gaskets and studs with factory parts. I haven't driven the car over 1000 miles with new turbos and rebuild. For the first 500 miles I took it easy on my car, just regular driving to and from work to kind of "break it in" I even did a oil change after the first 500 miles

The only upgrade I did was JE pistons, I put new factory connecting rods (was alot cheaper than after market since I get a discount.

I *think* they're just perpetuating the 'thick oil for racing' myth. It was true in the 60s, but modern oil has changed a lot since then, as have engine materials etc etc. I just don't think it's correct.

That said, I don't know much about how oil interacts with turbos, so I could be wrong. I just can't think of a scenario where a lower viscosity oil would be worse for them though, unless you put in like 0w20 or something crazy in the other direction.

If you could get an explanation from them regarding the oil recommendation, I think that would be good.

Good luck with it

For heavens sake, oh why, why did you not change the valve stem seals? Just going by looks is folly esp. for someone of your experience, and when the seals are well within reach and cheap to buy. Now you got one more thing to worry about. I changed the valve stem seals on my N62 engine and they visually looked fine (SxS with new), but on closer inspection with a magnifying glass, I could see a tiny gap between the stem and the old seals.
