Question Educate me on the N54 PCV system…and catch cans.

When I got my 07’ 335i a few months ago, one of the first things I did after doing all of the regular maintenance was install one of the BMS PCV valves in the valve cover. My car doesn’t burn much oil (about ¼ quart so far over 2,000 miles)..but I still think I might have an issue with the PCV system. With a brand new valve cover, a new PCV valve, and a new PCV valve tube with the check valve in it……how well does the oem PCV system work? I’m thinking about installing a catch can(s) in order to see if it stops the random puff of white smoke I sometimes get out of the exhaust after my car sits and idles for a long time (only seen it do it a coupe of times).

I’m assuming that since the turbos make good boost, I’m not burning excess oil, and I only see the little puff of smoke every 3-4 weeks if the car idles for a long time…it’s not a turbo seal issue…but a PCV issue…right? I haven’t put the new valve cover on yet…so maybe that’s part of the problem?

I’ve heard there is a high side, and a low side PCV system? Also….it sounds like the “right” way to do it is to pull the intake and plug the holes in the intake runners in the head? Is there an “almost as good” option that will still pull excess oil out of the system, but doesn’t require me to plug the intake holes?

Any advice would be great! Thanks

You can get the RB system, which is the best way, or you can get a BMS catch can. If you are going to be replacing the valve cover & the gasket, the RB system makes more sense because you have to take the valve cover off.

I'd also highly advise you to "sandwich" your OEM Valve cover gasket with Ultra Black for greater resilience & more trouble free miles. Just put a bead of Ultra Black in the grooves of the valve cover, put the valve cover gasket in place & run another bead of Ultra Black on top of the new OEM gasket. Maybe let it set up for 10 min. prior to placing the Valve Cover back on the head. Note: ultra black takes 24 hours to fully cure....
