AMG to replace 6.2 liter V8 with 5.0 liter Twin Turbo

http://www.motorauthority.com/cars/m...nt-amg-v8-v12/

More efficient-turbo AMGs. Nice.

"There will be several versions of the new force-fed 5.0L mill, a base version with 570hp and 665lb-ft of torque to replace the 6.2L V8 and a high-output 700hp/885lb-ft unit to replace the 612hp V12."

i'd imagine it'd be hard to find a manual gearbox that won't just roast with that much torque....

That's crazy tho... is this credible??? Such short life span for the 6.2L v8

I don't think the plans are to ditch the 6.2L V8 immediately. I am guessing that this turbocharged 5.0L will be a future engine.

not really... they can design it to handle all that power just like they have to design the entire power train and chassis to handle all the power

But they haven't? The 55k never came in a manual, and the 63 never came in a manual. In fact, AMG built the 63 to have less torque than the 55k so they could use their then new 7-speed transmission. Mercedes won't risk 600+ pounds of torque snapping a transmission if the driver messes up nor give up putting in their 7-speed transmission, which might in itself be in doubt if the 600+ lbs of torque is accurate.

Holy crud! That's awesome. I have always been awed at the awesome torque and horsepower that some of AMG engines out.
