Side mounted exhaust research
Good afternoon fellow forum members,
I have quite a question to ask, something I’ve been thinking about for a while but never found any topics on this to expand my knowledge on the topic. What I’m imagining of doing is having a side mounted exhaust on an E90 335i, like something you’d see on a Dodge Viper. Has anyone ever heard of this? Do y’all think it would even be possible? From what I see there wouldn’t be any room for this under the car, or even worse is thinking how close it would be to the gas tanks. Either way, before scrapping this idea I wanted to run it past my fellow members. Let me know if you guys think of this idea. Also let’s leave the rice or nice questions out of this, as I already know it would be both at the same time. |

Why would you want to do this? For appearance only or performance? I'd say scrap it, that look is for American muscle cars i.e. a Dodge Viper like you suggested, Shelby's etc.

Thank you for your quick replies
I will definitely do some research on the boom tube, that seems like an interesting solution. Not as clean of a look but it might be something that I could make do. And to answer Nicky’s question, you are right, that look is adapted to American muscle but I was never one to say it only belongs to one maker only. A style is like fashion, if done right it wouldn’t be tacky. My full idea behind this thought would be to keep the original exhaust system in place, but have exhaust cutouts pipe to the sides like seen in the Viper past my down pipes. This would allow me to still have my quite stock setup which I enjoy for my sleeper setup but with the ability to flip a switch and have a clear exhaust exit for performance improvement as well as a little backfire/flames for the looks. But I would only want to do this if it’s first of all safe, won’t scrape (as I am lowered on some springs), and can be done without looking trashy. Either way, thank you once again @nsjames for a quick reply which opens my scope of research on this topic. |

I also did forget to mention, I would want to try go for a look where it cuts through the side skirt near the rear wheels (I have some spares to work with) in an attempt to make it work. That way it wouldn’t scrape but from what I remember there’s quite a lot in the way for that to happen making it impossible, would you guys concur?

You can get ovalshape tubes to allow for better clearance. Nascar used to use them for the same reason. If I remember right 3" I'd round tube was only 1.5 or 1.25 high in oval configuration
