Major white smoke from tailpipe after motor swap
Wondering what may be the issue after swapping in a used motor. Came from an accident write off where the sedan was mashed in the passenger side front. The car had about 150k miles and expected it to run okay.
White smoke usually indication of head gasket or coolant getting in the engine. Trouble is the smoke was present during start ups with no coolant in the motor at all. Thinking it may be turbo(s) or head gasket? Or just needs a good run. The thick white smoke burns the eyes and doesn't really go away even after 30-40 mins at idle and revving motor to 3-4,000 rpms. |

I would especially look there since the turbo is mounted on the passenger side.

ran another 40 mins and looks pretty good now. still lots of white smoke on full throttle or over 3-4000 rpm runs. wonder if that's normal with egr and dpf bypass. concerned the cats are getting plugged and will likely bypass also

Have you checked your coolant level or oil level? Intercooler connections leaking? Do you hear weird noises on acceleration or when you let off? Check for play on the turbo shaft? Is scr still intact?

Was the EGR damaged and leaked some coolant into the intake prior to deleting? Could also be a bad valve cover gasket. At 150k the original would be hard as a rock and likely not sealing well.

coolant level is good
intercooler connection good with new seal (though i doubt how well they seal period and prefer traditional reinforced silicone hose and clamps) weird noises - a nice turbo spool and no weird /sharp noises no play on the turbo shaft by feel - realize this is not totally reliable though feels tight scr - needs to be removed... likely full of soot egr cooler long disconnected with lines blocked off a year ago valve cover gasket possible and will replace - reasonably easy job... even easier with engine out - doh!! bad cover gasket would leak oil more than pull in liquid that churns out white smoke no?? after a few starts and a couple short runs around the block... major vibration coming from transmission area... ( perhaps underfilled the tranny fluid? ) i have white smoke on start up after about 15-25 seconds of cranking. seems the D needs some time to build up pressure on first start up of the day... once warmed up or started it will start right away... will do some diagnostics... possible faulty injector(s)... ? |

looks like my white smoke issues are not yet solved. ran the ista and showed all the injectors in spec though number 6 on the edge of the range... the smoke show is mainly on start up and simmers down significantly one warm.. my glow plug controller likely toast and not sure that might be a clue....
