The BMW fault code was: 4873 Additional EGR cooling, plausibility: Additional EGR cooler bypass valve does not open When the spring fail, the valve stay open all the time. Looking from front of car and the top, The valve is at bottom of EGR cooled. When the spring is operating correctly, the lever should rest to the left. When broken, it stay to the right and valve is always open. |

I had to replaced the whole EGR cooler, almost $600 online part cost. It does not look like the spring can be easily replaced. Here is a picture of the broken spring (located underside of EGR cooler). The vacuum actuator is removed.

Did either of the cooler hoses get replaced when they changed the egr? A good friend with a keen eye spotted it on my car. I don't think this caused any problems in my case - no symptoms yet anyhow. |
