Crackling Speaker, Even When Radio is Off...?

My e92's passenger side door speakers produce crackles when I hit bumps, potholes, rough road, etc. The car has aftermarket JL audio speakers installed in the doors by the prior owner but the little tweeters by the mirrors appear to be stock.

In my initial exploration, I found that one of the wires to the tweeter had come disconnected and the disconnected wire was potentially being jostled into its mate when hitting bumps. However, the problem persisted even after reconnecting. Then, I took that tweeter out completely and found that the door speaker was crackling. Took that apart and found a slightly loose connector but still seemed to be making good contact. I tightened that up and put the tweeter back in but the problem persists.

The weird thing is that this seems to happen regardless of whether the radio is on or off... but it does seem to be louder when the volume is up.

The car has an aftermarket sub (not a huge one) and amp in the trunk installed by prior owner. I know very little about car audio setups but am pretty handy with a soldering iron and general electro mechanics.... what should I be looking for? Loose ground somewhere? Why only on the passenger side does this crackle?

thanks in advance.

The radio is never really off when the car is awake the display is
just muted. Why because they use the Radio and speaker systems
for alarms.(Seat belt unlatched light on etc etc..)

Depending on the sound system you have (which in general is not the Head Unit)
you may have water on your amp if you have one of the two systems that
has and amp.

There are three sound system types.
The base system only issued in 2010 to 2011.5 that is basically just the
head unit powering the speakers .

If you have a US 07 which is indicated in your header info you will have
either the Hi Fi or Logic 7 speaker system with and amp under the trunk
floor behind the rear US driver side rear wheel.
The amp getting wet in this area is known to get noisy before it goes out.
Check for water in this area.
You would need to swap speakers or get another speaker as a first step.

Find out what kind of system you have by running your Vin through

Thanks ctuna. Looks like I have the base stereo system. I didn't find any water in the trunk/around the amp... I'll next try swapping the door speakers to opposite sides to see if the problem moves and then will go from there.

If you are in the US and you do not have a 2010 to 2011.5
Assuming a US Car.
it's not possible for you to have a base system. If you live in the
Rest of the World it is. Says you have an 07 that means Logic 7
or Hi Fi both of which have amps in the same location.
Read the entertainment pdf.
Third link down.

Base System does not mean the Hi Fi system.

Make sure you lift that carpet and plastic out of the trunk. I had no idea that my amp was sitting in water until the speakers started crackling. There was absolutely no indications of water whatsoever until I pulled everything out. Your problem sounds exactly like mine.
