I'd recommend getting Bimmergeeks Protool app.

Personally have MHD, Protool and XHP.

Protool will read all codes, including shadow ones, amongst other stuff.

I'd also recommend getting a data log done using MHD if possible before buying.

you can have it checked all you want but won't do much IMO. most people can visually check things but that's about it.

don't buy this car if you can't or don't have the patience to deal with minor problems.

Shit will go wrong. car is old.

I'm planning to get it to do my own repairs and learn with the car plus my friend knows how to do a lot of work on cars and has a garage to work in

Things go wrong with every car, and most of us aren't loaded enough to afford brand new cars.

I agree if the owner can't maintain the car, and just wants an a to b car to run to the ground then, don't buy an N54.

When I bought my first BMW, i took it to a dealer for full inspection, passed with flying colors, 2 days after purchase, limp mode. Valve cover cracked, dumped oil in thre spark plug tube, shorted a bunch of stuff, DME fried, took out the injectors.

The car was 7 years old at the time. good luck with one double the age.

Never trust a man who can't spell "brakes".

Price does seem a little high. And how about them turbos? Something to look out for at that mileage with a tune. Have you asked him about oil consumption?

He has service records for all maintenance. I don't believe he's ever worked on it himself just gone to a shop and paid out of pocket every-time

I have gotten him down by $800 so $9700 but I'd like to get it down more. I don't think he wants to budge much due to how much he's paid with having shops do everything

Owned E36 320I, E46 325i, E46 330I, E39 as well, and now E90 335i, none of the above happened.

Valve covers don't crack in 2 days, looks like your car had several issues which so called BMW dealer never picked up on.

Saying that, there's always a risk buying second hand, but at the same time if you buy a good one, then the pay off is worth it, since your not spending 30k+ to buy a new car.

An inspection isn't really going to reveal a potential turbo issue. That's the only major issue that hasn't been addressed, and they will fail sooner or later. They will start to consume oil as the seals fail, so that's why I'd ask about oil consumption.

Lol, better look into how to do that or get a quote. At that point you might as well replace turbos. And, if he has the kit, the wastegate are rattling.

$5000 car.
