Prototype steering reservoir relocation bracket for Mr.5 style intakes
I am working on a hybrid intake somewhere between the Dinan and Mr.5 and needed to relocate my PS reservoir. Many people have come up with creative ways to mount their bracket but I had access to a waterjet shop so I drew one up.
The prototype PS relocation brackets that put the reservoir in about the same place as the Dinan kits do with a similar bracket. Shown on my e90 2008 335i but I believe it will fit the e90/e91/e92/e93 cars. I also upgraded it to the newer style reservoir while I was at it. I used the hoses from a car with active steering and cut them down and then spliced them into my old lines with some billet aluminum adapters (3/4"->5/8" and 5/8"->1/2"). I clamped them with pex crimp clamps instead of worm gear clamps so they are solid and won't cut me... The intake project I am working on is to put a 3" AEM dryflow filter in the front fender like the Mr.5 and Dinan kits. I know everyone will say do a DCI but I am in Phoenix, AZ so under hood temps do get very hot and I also just don't really like oiled filters and want to go with a dryflow style and have it be a bit more stock looking. I have a Dinan airbox lid but am missing the carbon intake tube for it so it needs custom 3" ducting. Hopefully I will have it done by next wekend... I plan on making some shields to direct airflow and a filter splash shield which will likely also be similar but of course slightly different than the Dinan versions. The PS brackets turned out great so if anyone is interested in one of the them and hardware send me a PM. These are great for making room for whatever you might want to put there be it an intake duct, or something else. I have 3 extras and could make more. I threw them in with the powdercoating lot for my e70 cargo cover brackets so they have a nice durable black finish. Thanks, Rich

I have 3 of the PS brackets. I have one extra filter splash shield. I have one air deflector for a 330is and will be test fitting the e90 version shortly. I also have an aluminum 3" adapter for cutting the stock airbox Mr.5 style that I likely won't use. -Rich

It is just a simple 3 bend shield similar to the Dinan one. I may make a wider one eventually if it will fit but it might be tight but it will work fine as is. I also made a simple bent T bracket to hold the air filter. I used black stainless bolts and washers to make them blend better into the fender! And my heat deflector that is similar to a Dinan, trying to block things off the same way. I have to test fit it, I haven't pulled the bumper back off after getting it back, I just took measurements and drew it up but haven't proved the fit yet... I also cut out a bunch of the diamonds to replicate the open grille form BMW that seems to be discontinued. I may also add tabs to mount the filter so that I can just put the clamp around the tabs and filter as a mounting point on the inside given that my tube is flexible and not rigid like the Dinan one. Here is the plan for my intake tube which should give me more fitment flexiblity than the real Dinan one... I had to get a 3.5" to 3" aluminum adapter and cut it down. I then squeezed it in the vice to oval it out a bit. I am Using a 3" neoprene coated duct that is very flexible, smooth flowing and good to 300 degrees. The Dinan tube is only 2.75" at the end. It is pretty but it is also rigid and 3" filters are cheaper than 2.75" if I can get it all to fit... The Dinan kit I have doesn't fit my car so I will likely sell it if I can get my kit to fit... -Rich

I have 3 of the PS brackets and 1 of the filter shield/bracket kits that are ready.
I will include the stainless hardware for both. The splash shield/bracket kit uses black oxide coated stainless bolts/washers on the fender side so that they are black and don't stick out or have to be painted making it nicer than some other kits IMO. I added them to my simple webpage so that you can order here: http://rbryant.freeshell.org/bmw_products.htm I gave a combo discount of a few bucks as the last order link if you want both. If there is enough interest for me to make more I will create a regular FS thread. -Rich

Here are my Mr.5 / faux Dinan install pics.
Engine bay (I may put a DEI velcro sleeve over the tube just to protect it and make it look a little cleaner. The Tial BOV could be recirculated into the intake tube if desired. There are 3" BOV adapters available and I would just need a 1/5" silicone adapter to go with one. Overall the Uni motorcycle filter (which probably also isn't necessary) is cheap and works well. Inside the fender. I added a tab to the air deflector shield which can be seen above (which I should have just had on it) so I can clamp around it for a solid inside mount. I used a cheap prefilter from Amazon to help keep some garbage out. I also plan to extend the splash shield outward about 1" keeping the same mounting points in the future just extending to the right side of the mouting tabs. The prototype was for a smaller filter but it still blocks most of it. Fender Liner (black stainless hardware): Filter mounting... I put a machine screw into the filter on the outside. The AEM dryflow 3" filter didn't have a mounting ponit and I didn't really want to put any bolts or screws on the inside where they could potentially be sucked into the engine(could probably be mitgated with jam and lock nuts but this is even safer. The large coarse threaded machine screw thorugh the rubber works well. I put some RTV on the prefilter so that it would not fray away around the hole before putting the screw in. It fits tightly and some of the airflow is blocked but this is also a much larger filter than say the Dinan kit uses so I am not worried about some of it being blocked. I had it all ready to button up and something dumb happend. I have a normal e90 plastic fog light on the driver side because my original glass one broke. It is larger and its the splash shield! I didn't notice because I test fit with the fog out so that I could reach in and feel around for clearnace. I will order the smaller one which should solve it! -Rich

Here is the final install.
I added a DEI heat shield to cover the tube. The tube is neoprene from mcmastercar so can take the heat and won't heat soak but this covers up all of the clamps and also protects it from potentially rubbing through. I am not a fan of the gold tape or gold DEI sleeve so I got the silver one. So the costs to replace the missing Carbon Fiber tube were:
Overall the $147 is a lot cheaper than the original tube and it is larger with a superior filter, I think it looks pretty decent and it won't scratch... I am not a fan of oiled filters here in the desert (they dry out and we have fine dust that gets through). I think the dryflow filter in the fender and a normal stock paper filter will give me more than adequate airflow without any heat soak on hot summer days. Max filtering, minimum maintenance until/if the fender filter clogs up... The DEI tube would also cover a Mr.5 style setup really well too to provide some extra protection and cover any "non factory looking" intake tubes (with something else non factory looking but looking like a common heat shield). It is 3ft long and can be trimmed easily as needed. I think I am happy with the UNI filter for the Tail QRJ BOV. I thought about using a 135degree bend and plumbing it back into the Faux Dinan tube but the sound is nice but not too distracting so I will skip the work. I still have a couple of power steering reservoir bracket kits for sale if anyone needs one. -Rich
