I couldn't see any way I was getting my hands in there to remove the module, so I took off the intake manifold, the dipstick and popped the coolant hose off the block as well.

A little extra work, but this gives you all the room you need.

To those that blindly just replace the controller, I expect you'll have shortened life from the part. Check your coolant temps, if they are not 86 to 88 degrees C, your thermostat has failed resulting in excessive glow plug activation while engine is running (not shown on the instrument cluster).

Newbie here, I have the glow plug module issue (service engine soon lite, glow plug code and now rough starting for about 5 seconds now that the weather is cold)

How do I check my coolant temps? If they are not in the range, I assume I would take it to my shop for replacement, but do I then also need to replace the GPM since it's gone bad as a result of overuse from the thermo being bad?

You can check your coolant temps in the hidden menu, here is a video describing the process to do it:

If you are getting codes and rough starting, you will need to replace the GPM.
Chances are pretty good that you will need the Tstat done as well, but you can check this by monitoring your coolant temps.

My glow plug module failed and my thermostat is fine.
The glow plug module is prone to fail and I do not think it is necessarily from a coolant thermostat fault.

After monitoring this value and spending an hr figuring out that Carly needed a flash update, (settings >> test adaptor), both show my thermo seems to be working well, but now that I know it's a likely issue, I'll keep an eye on it.

Ya, my temps seem to be good. Did you notice a drop in MPH and power when yours was faulting?

I see you are in Atlanta. Have you had any tune work done? Walnut blast? I'm at about 80k miles.

Yes, I am in Atlanta. I am now at 105K miles. I had to replace the glow plug module at around 90K miles. I did not notice a change in MPG or power after replacement.

I do not have a tune on my 335d, I am totally stock.

The CBU cleaning was done Dec 2015 at 76K miles. I saw better performance and MPG after the CBU cleaning. The CBU cleaning was done by the dealer (in Gwinnet county). I did not have to pay as it was covered by the extended warranty. Prior the CBU cleaning, I had multiples injector replacement (a total of 17 new injectors).

Fuses are all okay and I can communication with DDE, is there a way to verify the blue relay?

...butr for the life of me couldn't get the large plug to release, very tight back there, and seems like to much movement to be able to push the tabs in enough. Any ideas/suggestions? Will try the method of undoing the bolts too. Thanks

I am having a glow plug module on its way from ECS tuning as we speak.

I will be looking to do the same, hoping not have to take off the manifold.

Where in N. Cal are you? If you are nearby, I don't mind being there and lending a hand as needed. Two heads better than one and all. I have done a lot of maintenance in the past so not totally clueless, but still not a pro either.

Here is another video I found on youtube with a similar approach to removing the glow plug on an E60, so it is definitely doable (as many have suggested here.)

Just an update, to help others who might come across this thread in future:

Bought the BMW original module (part no. 12218591724) from ECS tuning for $120 (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...e/12218591724/), free shipping took a little while but the car was working fine and it didn't bother me.

Found a local BMW indy shop who has high rating on yelp, called them and they said they will charge 1/2 hour to change the part ($75). FYI, this was the book time so whatever system they use to estimate the time involved in changing this module recommends only 1/2 hour of labor.

They changed the module and cleared the codes, all is good.

Hello Mike I replaced the glow plug module. Ordered from the original bmw Oem from FCP euro. And the code is still here. Code P064C three times. It says code P064C indicates a fault in the glow plug control module for a predetermined period of time. Dose the glow plug module have to be programmed?

The glow plug module can be replaced without removing the intake manifold, but it is very difficult to get to. It's mostly blind work. The most difficult connector was the one on the bottom right side (X2402). There is a clip in the front and back that have to be depressed at the same time while pulling down. An angled needle nose plier did it for me in the end but there were many swear words spoken. After that connector was off it was a breeze.

If you bought it from FCPeuro you can just exchange it again. But I recommend taking your intake off and measuring the resistance of each of your glow plugs. Also check the fuse for the glow plug module first.

I had the exact same issue with the large plug. After I went to a local independent and they said they wanted $375 labor to change the module I got real serious about trying again. I put on a mechanics glove which gave me more grip and got that big plug off. You have to make sure you are really squeezing the clips. For me one side made a click, the other did not.

Hey Guys, quick question. I've been trying to find some replacement plugs for the 335d US (M57Y), however, I'm not sure if the Beru GE102 glow plugs are compatible with the US model 335d. Does anyone have some insight on this?

I noticed the EU Glow Plug part # is: 12237786869
The US Glow Plug part # is: 12237807277

I'm looking at potentially sourcing them from Europe if the two part numbers above will function the same, given that they are literally half the price there.
