Request for help, diagnosing 30FF and 29D0 Issues
I recently installed a JB4 and now I'm experiencing some issues. Specifically:
I had the plugs and coils replaced ~2k miles ago in Oct 2019, so I'm fairly confident those are fine. I've also replaced my charge pipe back in May 2019 with this one from ECS: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-part...t/010997ecs~a/ I'm running the latest maps from Burger as well, just updated a few days ago. I'm sure people are going to ask for logs, which I'm happy to provide. Here's my question: under what conditions should I log in order to make diagnosing this easier? I.e. what map, what gear(s), presumably I need to clear the codes first, etc. I have some preliminary logs here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/a1c4l01t2...sMe5piD2a?dl=0, but I'm more than happy to produce new ones. Resurrecting this as it's still going on. I did a smoke test at my local shop and no leaks were found. Any other ideas?

Swap plugs round with another cylinder top see if misfire follows, then do the same for coils and check if misfire follows... For 30FF fault, follow this guide... https://bmwtuning.co/bmw-n54-30ff-en...-repair-guide/ |

So I tried running the car in pass through mode, JB4 still attached, but not doing anything. The issue still presented. I left it with my shop for close to 2 weeks and it didn't happen...driving away from a $200 bill for nothing: happened right away.

Did you swap plugs to see if misfire follows? For boost leak issues you need to start with the cheapest, check charge pipe connections, DV valve/Bov, replace All Vacum lines if it hasn't been done recently, check vacumn canister connection points /cracks. Then check boost solenoids. |

Failure to reach boost setpoint is likely a consequence of the misfire, not the cause of it. Forget about the possible leak for now - in any case, you've already smoke tested.
First things first. Do the coil swap as suggested above. Then do the plug swap as suggested above. If the misfire is still confined to cyl 4 after those swaps, think about an injector swap. That's slightly more involved but really not difficult - for this test I would not worry about renewing the injector seals or decouplers or even re-coding for the differences in injector flow rates. For the long term, those three items should be addressed but right now you just need to determine the source of the problem. |
