CIC crashing with 6NR BMW Apps
Hi, I’ve recently completed the 6FL + 6NR retrofit.
I basically placed the hardware and changed my VO to add these options. USB works, phone charges, music is playing over USB (although the interface does not update, it says not playing and I cannot control the music with the car) but the BMW Apps crashes on launch. First it says “connect to external device” then it stays empty, then it shows “BMW apps loaded” and while it goes to that message I can see the CiC froze because the signal loading icon is no longer rotating. After 10 seconds the screen becomes black. It restarts when I press any button. Does anyone recognize this behaviour? Did I forget to code something? EDIT: Also the "Plugin" option is not showing, did I miss an option to code? I have an original CIC + combox combination, but I retrofitted the USB plug in the armrest. EDIT 2: Added full list of options, anything missing? Update, I've also added S6NFA as I saw online (in the original BWM dealer notification) that 6NF was required for the 6NR. Having added that option to the VO added the "Plugin" section, but didn't improve anything towards the functioning of BMW Apps.
I've reset all modules that could be possibly relevant using an expert NCSExpert profile without manipulation and I have also compared my TRC files with someone that has 6NR officially, there is no difference besides miles/kilometers, language, and other small stuff that couldn't possibly influence this behavior. Nobody has any clue as to what causes this? Is my software too old? |

Did you plug the USB ports into the Combox correctly? The black one is for USB drives and the blue one is for the phone cradle I think. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Also what version is your CIC? You need a certain version for apps to function. Also did you update the combox to UPD1008? |

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I’ve tried both usbs and decided the black one (left) is correct. The blue one would charge the phone but not play music. The current version of cic is unknown but not the latest (yet the menu shows bmw apps, so I guess the software knows about it).
I’ve downloaded the latest firmware from bmw and installed it via usb successfully. Would you think the cic version is too old and causes incompatibility with the phone? In that case I’ll go find a dealer who can update it for me. The cost of a cable is too expensive to me for a one-time-job. |

Phone comparability should be handled by the Combox update.
Both USB ports should work. You might need to add the phone integration code into the VO. $644 was the code I think. With my installation I can connect USB drives to either port and they detect and play. Try adding $644 and default code the CIC/Combox before looking at the CIC update. |

I don't see an immediate difference in functionality. It also didn't solve the issue unfortunately. I also found option S6VAA. Do you think that one might be useful? |

Another clue to this mystery. It's actually built in 02/11. I'll see what it says in the VO, didn't really pay attention to it, but adjust where necessary and report back. Thanks so much for helping so far.

#0311 already in the VO. I've also tried adding $6VA but that also didn't make any difference.
Another thing, am I using the correct app? I am using the "Connected" app from BMW on my iPhone 8. The app is able to read the fuel level and the total range right before the CIC crashes. The app always stays with the "Connect to Vehicle" status. Also just 1 time so far, when I set the destination on the app before connecting the USB, the car asked (after connecting to USB) to take over that destination. So there's definitely some good communication going on, just crashes the CIC... |

I'm out of ideas after that. I don't have an iPhone so can't say what should happen but it sounds possible that the device is causing the CIC to crash.
If you have an old iPhone of the same vintage as the car it might be worth trying that to see if it works. |
