Oil catch can necessary?
After removing my charge pipe and seeing some oil inside of it, I was concerned but I now understand that it's normal for our N54 motors to have oil blow by in the CP. But normal or not, I can't imagine it's good for the long term performance of our motors. So my question is, does getting a oil catch can alleviate this issue and is it actually necessary? I run a stage 2 tune with supporting mods and drive my car maybe 2K miles a year.

Not necessarily necessary, but doesn't hurt, either. Mostly keeps the valves cleaner longer. One could argue that it also keeps MAP sensors clean and maintains efficiency of the intercooler if they aren't coated in oil.
If you're worried about it and want maximum benefit, go with the RB external PCV kit, Mishimoto OCC that he recommends and tap/plug the head ports. This handles the low side which is where most driving occurs. You can also add a 2nd, basic can to the high side, but those catch very, very little. |

Both have a really clean passenger side option also, or an even better driver side location that isn't on the strut tower brace. Turner also offers perfect length A/N fittings, was told they run this setup on their race cars also so good enough for me. Oh and they come with a dipstick! lol if you've been missing having a dipstick to check oil levels ![]() Edit: I'm now going with an RB external in combo with to see results

Like others have said ....not necessary, but having one might keep your valves cleaner longer. Honestly, some oil particles in the intake stream isn't going to do a thing as far as reducing power and performance.
I ordered a catch can a few days ago.....just because they are so cheap. |
